View Full Version : Different Series 4 Factory alloys ?

Alright I'm asking this on behalf of a family friend. But I'm interested to see as well...
Does anybody know if there was ever a "change" of some sort in the factory alloys on the series 4 onward Patrols ? Maybe the gloss or coat used? I "think" I have noticed what he means my self. Some look "different" even though they appear to have identical shape.
I've done some googling for S4 shape patrols and tried to find a good example of what I mean...
Notice the photos below. See how the new patrol's wheels have a much shinier finish compared to the other one, which has more of a matte/grey finish. I know the Powerful 4x4 Patrol is wearing muddies and mighty slightly dirty but, they just look "better" in contrast to the new ones...
Thoughts ?

That design came out in both 16" and 17". Maybe that is why they sometimes look different?

Well there's something I didn't know, I assumed they were all 17". That might have something to do with it ...

Yea I was matching my trailer to the car and almost bought a set of 16" on gumtree. Just noticed the difference in time.

I think navara came with a 16" variant..
Didn't think it was 100% identical but very close..
It could quite possibly be a better finish on the rim, Ie finer machining tolerance..
Or maybe a slightly different material compound..

Yea hadn't thought of that.

Ok this is the Navara version. Close but notice it hasn't go the square dip on each spoke and they are 16".

That's them..
Very similar..
It could also be an optical illusion too Hodge..
Black bar work and blacked tyres might make a rim "pop" over an all white setup with just clean tyres..
It looks as if my 08 rims do have a clear coat.. but im not 100% on that..

Hodge,
I bought a sixth rim from a 2007 model for my Simpson trip with my 2011 rims, and I noticed when I got home that the powder coating on the back side of the rims was a darker colour to the 2011 ones .... the face looks the same though, and no-one has ever picked it .

Exactly about what ? I looked and found nothing on this topic.
Nissan part number has been the same since s4 release late 2004 and bloke working there assured me there was never a 16 inch version in that rim.
His theory is the clear shiny coat slowly fades leaving the faded alloy look .

I reckon you're on the money here mate. Which is background, why I asked this one behalf of someone because....
He's after some off road tires, but can't decide whether to get black steelies or keep the alloys and just slap some tires on those.
And like me, he too noticed some tires look good on those alloys as a combo where others don't on an identical rim.
So we were curious what the difference was...

If he's going med-hard off road Id say that the steel rims would be better, not the 3mm chinese jobs but proper
King,, or ROH ones
