Hi all,
I'm having a bit of trouble with my 98 GU 2.8, starting is a major pain in the ass takes a good three to four turnovers before it rumbles to life with a cloud of smoke. I live in Canberra and in the cold this only gets worse. Ive changed the glow plugs and the battery is pretty much new. Having trouble identifying what the issue could be. It has done 320 big ones, is it still worth to pour money into it or just ditch the thing.
Cheers in advance.

G'day Kezza, welcome aboard! I'm sure someone here with 2.8 experience and or sound mechanical knowledge will get back to you in time :-) Might pay to add a little more detail could be helpful for them too. Smoke colour maybe and current glow timing as it appears, what happens if you double glow it and start on the second, is it same same?

Hello, Kezza, and welcome to the forum.
Have a look at this thread, http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?12450-Why-Diesels-Smoke&highlight=diesels+smoke
This should give you a starting point.
Apart from head issues and sometimes the key stripping out of the harmonic balancer, The 2.8 s seem to be a slow but reliable power plant.

Hey mate, The smoke from start up is black, double glowing gives me a similar result which involves at least 3-4 turnovers. Once it's started its pretty much alright once its warm.

Time for a compression test I'd say.
