Last night got to the train station. Car started but did crank over quite as good as normal. Also makes a noise like the cover on the extractors rattles just as it starts but goes away after 5-10 seconds. Went to start it this morning but nothing, has all accessories and everything on. Trying jump starting but no luck. Motor just clicks. Would this be the starter motor? Would that rattle I thought was just an exhaust shield rattling on start be the starter shatting itself?

Dead battery. Colder the battery, the less output. Put meter on it and see what battery is at sitting with nothing on. 12's are too low. If the motor just clicks when trying to start, it is not getting enough current.
Jump-starting needs good and thick copper in the cables, a lot of cheap cables have thick insulation but very little copper. Don't try and start a car straight after putting on cables, let it sit for a few minutes for energy to get back in the sad battery, this will allow it as well as cables to supply enough current to get her going.

The rattle noise sounds more like a different issue of oil not getting to the top of the valve train quickly. A very good reason to never rev up a motor just started. Check oil and ensure right grade for motor in the current weather conditions.

More then likely your starter motor filled up with crud from the bog hole the other week and corrosion has started.

Try given the stater motor a couple of hits with a hammer.

Cheers Yendor, I will give her a good bashing tonight. I have another one from the last owner but don't know if it knew, reco'd or fucked. How can I check this one that is out of the car

With some jumper cables you can power the starter motor up off the vehicle, then with some 4x2 timber try and stop the starter pinion from spinning.

And if it stops spinning does that mean it disengages and it's ok

If you can stop the starter motor spinning with the timber it's stuffed.

Same as if it's fitted to the vehicle.

- to the housing/body.
+ to the main positive terminal on the solenoid.

You will also need to supply a + to the smaller terminal on the solenoid.

Or you could take it to your local Auto Electrician to test.

Couple of hits to the starter and the missus cranking and boom she started. Changing it on the weekend. Do they have a gasket or can I use hi temp silastic

Not a bad idea to apply a thin layer of sealant around the seat, but mine(GQ RB30) fitted as it is. But, I reckon if you go mud off roading, then a tiny bit of sealant seal probably not a bad idea.
