I've always used peanut butter for bait but I'm out at the moment.
What else can you use in a spring trap?????

never found the spring traps useful, bait, bait, bait, unless of course u have other animals, or as scotty suggested the shot gun will work nicely, u could also get a cat, or even better maybe a few pet snakes

Haha.... I'm sick of putting holes through the floor....doesn't do the house much justice..lol
I got rid of them last year but they're back.... bustards ......getting cold and wet!
If the missus kept the house cleaner maybe we would be right......haha she's not reading this!!!

we have a problem in the back yard, we have guinea pigs 4 the kids, and the mice just love the free food source!!! we tried doing our own veggie garden once and the bloody mice destroyed it!!!!! gave up in the end

Yep, same here, They were in the garden but didn't come in during the sumer. Now they're getting cold so I need to get rid of them.
I had some of those rat/mice pouches which makes them dehydrate and die somewhere in the house...so I gave up on those and now I'm purely hunting the buggers

Spent 3 hours today tracing a fault that kept tripping one of the house power circuits. It was a mouse (a fat one!) that had wedged itself between some terminals at the rear of an old caravan fridge kept on the verandah.
Weather's driving 'em inside. Time for another bait blitz.

If you use anything that dehydrates them, leave bowls / containers full of water outside, u might find they will die outside rather than inside

Yeah, I have no problem catching them with peanut butter but I'm out tonight so I thought I would ask what the alternatives are.
Good luck hunting boys!!...hahahahahaha

watch out using the Talon and mouse baits, If a rat takes it, they often get into the roof space and die there, even worse, they die in the wall cavity and you cant find em, by golly do they stink, for weeks..

We had a mouse plague in Victoria once, ended up using a 12 gallon drum half full of water with a school ruler as a plank on a pivot, on the end of the plank we put cheese, you can guess the rest, thousands in the morning.
Grab a 1 gallon demijohn, lay it almost horozontal, put a ramp up to it like a school ruler, chuck some chook pellets in the bottom and about 4 drops of olive oil. the mouse goes up the ramp, slides down, gets some oil on his feet, has a feed and cant climb out, too slippery, so he wears himself out and becomes dehydrated and ..........morto, finito, end of story, finito a la musica!!

Ive got a serious rat and mouse problem at the moment too...I found the throw baits are great to get into tight spots. I have no man holes and an open pitch roof so I'm finding myself ripping off parts of the tin roof to try and find the dead rats as they are stinking the house out...lol...I can't stand the smell and I start to gag when I find a half rotting rat in the roof cavaties...YUK!!!!!!!!!
I have been thinking of trying that ruler trick like Rod said...Might try that this weekend!

I use peanut butter - but if the bait is wrapped in an old bit of stocking, they have to gnaw at it, which makes it more likely that the trap will go off.
Pumpkin seeds also work

12 guage shells loaded with rock salt instead of lead shot doesnt do as much damage but still knocks the stuffing out of a mouse..!!

Mine started off 2 years ago with slight scratching in walls....6 months later loads of scratching...1 year later I had a party of rats going nuts!
Get onto that quickly, bait up and smell the goodness!
As soon as I got my chooks they came flooding in too.

A slight variation on the "ruler trap":
Use a wine or beer bottle over a bucket of water. u can then lube the neck making it even more difficult for the buggers to turn around and retreat.
Beer bottle with the base wedged into the opening of a heavy shoe or boot is a quick setup.
Happy trapping!

Funny you say that, my Jack Russel just caught a mouse about 10 minutes ago inside and he caught a rat last week outside.
I just gave him a treat and plenty of praise so he's all fired up now...lol

Found living on the edge of suburbia that the first cold/ wet nights brings them inside. Happy days.
Best bait is half an almond. Jams under the 'pins' and is hard enough to stay on and set off the trap.
Suggest you rub the other half into your fingers before you set it up as this gets rid of the smell of human hands on the bait and trap.
For absolute dynamite, polish the rubbing metal parts with very fine emery paper and then lubricate with some of the oil from the almond (just rub it on) before you set the trap. Don't fart after that though as you'll set it off.
Good luck with the animal kingdom

Update, I am on a mouse killing frenzy at my place with sultannas in the traps. They hook in well and can't be taken off without a bit of effort from the mice.
I am killing about 2 a night now in the living room...It's getting out of control, never seen this many mice in this house before!!!
Filling every possible hole I can find in the house with foil inside and rapid set concrete outside too but I reckon this is just a waste of time...lol

Another vote to let a feline into your life. Also, the Russian people say if you have a mouse problem, better to get a female cat. The males mostly want to wander, fight and fornicate, while the females, even if fixed, are trying to provide a nice nest to raise kittens in.
The (female) cat I had as a kid certainly was a killing machine.

I have seen at Bunnings - they are strips with glue like stuff on them
just put them down, and in the morning you have a few of the buggers stuck to the sheets
then just dump them on a bucket to drown them, get pliers to take the bodies off (if you want to re-use the sheets)
and re-set them
no funny smells (from in cavities - with ratsak)
cheers

custard powder and cement powder, mixed up on a plate is a cheap way of getting them...
I got a live catch trap to see how many we got on the farm and just in my shed i was catching 30 a day. And I taped up a small hole in the wall so i could put bait in, and when i went to reset it, they would poke their heads out. Arrogant little buggers!

When you set a RAT trap in the roof space, it's a good idea to tie it to something, they get caught and head for the cavity or where you can't get to them.
Not so bad if you have tiles, but a pain with a tin roof!!

Yep, the place where we got the bait originally sold 3000 packets in a week. Now there's a 2 month wait.
We seem to be getting the best of the little pricks now though.
Didnt get any snakes last year which usually means it's going to be a mouse filled winter. The cold is killing them off so it wont be too bad next warm season...
