G'day
I have a 2009 3ltr turbo Patrol and since this morning I have an engine warning light on and the Turbo doesn't kick in. Has anyone ever had a faulty Boost Sensor and if so what were the symptoms because I am hoping thats all it is. The car has a "pressure/vacuum" gauge fitted which is showing zero or very little pressure when I accelerate.
Thanks in advance
Graeme

Have you tried cleaning the Maf sensor get a can from repco or any of those shops
and give it a good spray don't touch the wires inside spray air dry see how that goes
if theres an oily film there id suggest a catch can to help in the future

Check your hose connections on the intercooler make sure one hasn't popped off

I actually have a new MAF sensor (the guy I bought the car off gave it to me....wonder why) which I was going to change but I need an Allen key with the hole at the end.

Tried that but I will recheck.

They are called "security torx" fasteners.
Best off getting them in a 1/4 or 3/8 socket drive version from, say, Supercheap.
There are other ones here and there around the engine as well in larger sizes

I wouldnt think you'd need a vacuum on your gauge

Where are you getting your boost readings from.??
You're not blowing heaps of black smoke are you?

Forget the vacuum part. Its just a pressure gauge with a hose coming out of the front of an adaptor block under the "boost sensor".
I changed what I think is the MAF sensor (the sensor just after the air filter) with a new one I had but no difference. Its not blowing smoke. It sounds a lot louder than usual. I checked for any hoses that have come off but couldn't find any. I'm a bit baffled! Is the MAF sensor the same as the MAP sensor?
Thanks Evil Twin. I got a set of security torx fasteners from bunnings.

MAF - manifold Air Flow, the sensor near the air box on the inlet plumbing
MAP - Manifold Air Pressure, the sensor on the intercooler outlet plenum

I know you said you checked all hoses, I'm assuming air hoses, for example the intercooler hoses etc...
But have you checked the vacuum hoses that go between the vacuum solenoid, turbo actuator etc... ?

Welcome Graeme.
As others have said have a look for a broken hose around the turbo actuator.
But also get onto a Scangauge mate. They are an awesome bit of kit and can give you a live feed of what's happening with your engine but also let's you see any fault codes, and once fixed you can clear them..

G'day Hodge
Thanks. I've checked every hose, large and small on the intercooler and solenoid (almost under the airbox) to the turbo actuator (front of turbo). I'll try again in the daylight.

On start up the actuator arm should lift hard up. If it's dowie or slow then you have a leak..

Thanks Bigguywesty
It actually has a scangauge fitted but until 10 minutes ago I didn't know how to use it. I found the instruction book which he left in the pocket behind the front passengers seat and all else has failed so I read it! Error code is P0102.
Possible causes
- Faulty mass air flow sensor
- Intake air leaks
- Dirty mass air flow sensor
- Dirty mass air filter
- Mass air flow sensor harness is open or shorted
- Mass air flow sensor circuit poor electrical connection

The sensor appears perfectly clean as does the one the previous owner left me which I tried. So unless they are both faulty its back to checking hoses etc in the morning.

maybe check the wiring going into the MAF sensor, are they good connections?

I will go over it again in the morning
Thanks everyone for your help and advice. I will update when it is sorted.

Doesn't take.much to dirty the maf sensor.. take to it with a tin of contact cleaner and see how it goes..
FYI do one thing at a time.. it'll take a touch longer but you'll know what the issue was..

It's not DTC PO120 is it? There is a recall on the accelerator pedal switch.

Thanks to Everyone who helped. Problem now fixed. I'm a bit confused though. It turned out being the MAF sensor (faulty). I'm confused because last night I put the new sensor in which the previous owner had left me but it made no difference so I put the original one back in. This morning when it was quite cool I had to go out and it worked fine. After I parked the car for a while and went to come home it was faulty again (warmer air temp). I was pretty convinced it was the MAF sensor faulty or dirty so I cleaned the original with the spray and it made no difference. I put the new one in and it works like a charm. The only thing I can think of is I'm so stupid I didn't actually put the new sensor in last night. Anyway all good now. Thanks again

Your not stupid mate can easly be done
with trying to nut out the problem you
might have thought it was the new one

... that might also be a dodgy plug/wire on the connector.
Which would also explain why old mate had a spare MAF sensor.
They are pretty reliable really but, yes, they do fail.
They only need a clean about every 20 or 30 thousand K's and some never get done for 100's of thou
See how ya go, if the problem returns or is intermittent then I would be checking the plug

And some just never get done. Bloke across the road came to me saying his NAV is a bit off. I asked him if he has cleaned the MAF. He said whats that? I showed him, handed him my can of cleaner, as I don't need it now, and told him to remove it and clean it. Haven't heard back yet if it made a diff.
But yeah it could be just a dodgy wiring connection too.
