View Full Version : Roof rack storage

Been thinking for a while about the benefits of removing the roof rack whilst around home to improve fuel economy and also help with parking underground in car parks with tight height clearance.
I'm concerned that if I remove the roof rack permanently though, I'll never bother putting it back on. Being an old steel cheapie it's very heavy and difficult to install without a few tall helpers
The roof rack is only used camping for shovel holder / fire wood / antenna fixing point etc so isn't overly critical, but still useful to have.

Saw the idea on fb to use a combo of ropes and pulleys to store the roof rack in the garage above the vehicle, which theoretically would make it very easy to remove and reinstall
Has anyone done something similar or have any suggestions on how to go about it? Strength rope / size pulleys / how to secure it etx

Old man does that, works well for him. His is just an aluminum one tho a bit lighter just does one end at a time i think and ties it up with rope.

You can buy lift/lock pulley ropes, great for lifting a weight then locking it with the pulley.
They are rated and perfect fo your needs, you'll find them in the boating/yacht section.
With my wheel hoist was going to use them . another idea is to use some small 12v
winchs [1200lb] perfect again. Ill find some links for you.

Done similar in my shed, lift it off with an 4000lb ATV winch.
If you have a spot to lift it off four of those ratchet straps will do a fine job for you, take care lowering though

Daughter has a similar setup for their Howling Moon RTT, big and heavy. I must ask how they lift it as they don't use a winch.

I just use four motor bike tie downs on each corner of the rack. I thought about making a pulley system but it takes a whole two or three minutes to raise or lower the rack so i chose the lazy option. Lol

Yeh that's what I'd be concerned about with the ratchet straps... Lowering it slowly and carefully

No photos sorry. I just have four tie downs suspended from loops in put in the exposed beams in the garage. I just park the car under the rack then carefully lower each tie down, corner by corner.
Easy to do as long as your car is parked square under the rack. Not hard to do though.

exposed beams
Ahh they don't build them like that anymore.
We used to have a permanent chain wrapped around one of the steel beams at the old man's place, throw a block n tackle on and away you go. Come to think of it I think it's still there...

Depends how much romm above the Patrol,,,,,if you have 300mm that be would be ideal.
you could be forgiven if a little out the way, you could just push it over a few inches
if needed
