View Full Version : Switch to cut power to antenna

Hi All,

Something I've been thinking about for a while as I want to have a switch which will cut power to the Antenna so that it descends automatically. This is mainly for when I am driving down some tracks that are intent on pinstriping my patrol and not wanting to replace the mast every couple of months.

Cheers

Sounds like a good idea, I've been thinking about that myself. Should be pretty easy to install too. I have a touch screen stereo in my Patrol with GPS etc and have installed a switch that interrupts the headlight signal to the stereo so that if I'm driving in the country with headlights on during the day the screen doesn't dim.

I had a toggle switch fitted just for that reason,
Or just put a MP3 in lol
Edit see you have a DX

I did this in my GUII. I have a on/ off rocker switch in the switch panel next to the antenna mast height switch. All i did was redirect the power to the oem switch through the new switch.

Yep... that will do it. Simple mod and handy if you are off road and have a head unit that wants to put the Antenna up for cd or sd muzak

My head unit used to switch on, when off, when I select reverse the then the antenna would come up. PIA when out in the bush, gotta watch out for dem tree's....

I was going to do this mod on mine, as my pioneer unit sends the mast up even when the radio is not on. But in the end I cut out the aerial wire at the unit and got a better GME am/fm whip (drivers side bullbar in picture) and life's good now. 50x better reception and no mast damage!

I have a factory switch next to the head unit that seems to control the power antenna, I presumed that it disabled the power antenna when the stereo was on (I can't tell what it does because the power antenna doesn't work)

It would be nice if thats what the switch does but all it does is either go up to half mast when down or full mast when up.

Yeah that was another idea I was thinking about Hodge. My head unit pioneer will put the antenna up even when listening to music through my phone, don't have a CD player.

That switch is esp handy for the ZD30's... they use it to lower the Antenna to 1/2 mast when the grenade goes off and the engine dies

It lowers the antenna to about half its normal height so that you can't get annoying radio stations when you are off road. Those with 6.5 Ltr V8s get an extra couple of Ks per ltr. because or the reduced wind resistance.

So you saying I should replace my antenna lol

Ok so not exactly on topic but I have the opposite problem - sort of. My antenna does not extend/retract even tho I can hear the motor running at start up and shut down. Seems that access is difficult and before I dive in just wanted to get your thoughts?

Sounds like the "tail" on your mast is kaput! Maybe you need one of these (https://www.autobarn.com.au/aerpro-nissan-patrol-pathfinder-mast-1998-2004-model-1998-2004-model-ap272)

Check this thread (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?22300-Power-antenna-replacement&highlight=change+mast).

Or just ditch the shitty oem antenna and out a whip antenna on the bull bar and get awesome reception.

I always used to forget to put my aerial down, in the end I snapped it in half.
I put the GME fm whip on the bullbar and couldn't believe how much more radio reception it got. I used to hardly get local stations and now I get Melbourne stations if I want.

Don't bother with the Melbourne stations old mate! We'd be stuck between two worlds here.
Thanks for the 'whip' advice I'll be searching for Uncle Bazza's Stock Feed ads soon enough ;-) !
