Alright, a little background. After lurking about different forums, haunting googleometer and perusing a thousand magazine articles,
the light bulb clicked on. Nissan Patrol GQ drivetrains were in all opinions the toughest thing (except for army corporals )
that God had placed on earth.

So armed with my epiphany and a modicum of cash I began the hunt for a beast in fair to middling order. Although I wasn't particularly
concerned about the state of the engine it did have to be a 4.2. Finding what was required up here in Gods country was proving difficult.
I had just resigned myself to searching interstate when one surfaced 20k from home.

Out for a look! Bit nasty round the cab, bit of rust in chassis but repairable, donk seized. Perfect!
Odometer says just over 200k but think that is a little suss for 97 model.

BUT LOOK AT THE GOODIES ON IT!

Long range tank
2" Pedders lift with kevlar bags
ARB compressor, lockers front and rear
ARB steel winch bar
Warn winch, synthetic rope
All but new Blacktrak rims with 90% 33" BFG AT's

There was a set of 35" and rims but I passed on them thinkin the local gendarmerie may scowl.

All in all I think I got a bargain. Handed the man 45 cabbage coloured banknotes.

Now, however, the true spending begins. Will be posting more as the dollars begin to burn!

Westy I have budgeted 15k for engine rebuild including gt2863 turbo. Muganic says it is doable at that.
Chassis repairs and panel beater and auto elec etc etc etc about another 10. Hopefully all up a shade under 30k.
I believe it's money well spent if the vehicle is reliable and strong. This should be my final 4X4.

Ive heard heaps of stories of ppl re-doing their patrols with a complete make over
throwing $30K plus at it just to avoid all the electronics of the newer models. You
end up with a brand newish Patrol as reliable as all get out, better than paying $60k
for a new one IMO, well done I like your thinking

Bloke I look at it this way, I can go spend 80k + on a new 4X4 that the wife won't let me get dirty AND I will spend another pile
of dollars on it geting it to truly usable condition. More pointedly I do not trust all the electronic gadgetry that comes with a new vehicle.

Keep it simple stupid has been a personal mantra for a long while now.

Every bore badly scored, every piston to match. Oddly no 2 was the worst.

Thankfully a full rebuild had been budgeted for.

Mechanic has got block away now for resleeve and head has gone for crack test etc.
Fuel pump is away for rebuild and 11mm head, something about more lift and longer injector opening time.
Don't understand it all, as a mechanic I'm a great carpenter. At least it is all beginning to happen. Phew!

Spent the morning with my favourite magician/welding mate repairing the chassis.
some fairly nasty rust in there.66125

Required some skillful cutting66126

And patching66127

Finally a heavy plate over that again66128

All in all a good mornings work, can't see that lot failing any time soon!

Reminds me of a guy in an article from one of the mags years ago, just as all the Computer and plastic 4x4s came on the market.
He did a body off resto of his early Bj47 troopy including a 6.5 TD motor,,and all the good gear and it cost him $30k for his "perfect"
4x4. a new wagon at the time was about $45K. so he now has a vehicle set up the way he wants. so well done Touses

Did you weld extra tabs for antenna or driving ligts etc before you had it painted??

The block was acid washed and resleeved. The head tested ok so was only shaved, new valves and heavysprings. Don't know what heavy may mean

in this case, some sort of mechanic speak. hahaha

Heya mate. Had a 'site' meeting with my fabricator and mechanic yesterday, we've thrashed out a plan between us but still a fortnight away from the actual doing.

If you can supply piccies or a schematic of those plates they may meld with said plans. A costing wouldn't go awry either.

May not save $ but may help time wise! Big thanks for your effort here!:smiley_thumbs_up:

Hi mate! Received your email. Am I right in guessing the schematics are for this unit?

I do like the look of this but have a couple of queries.

In diagram part D there is a cutout which I assume the cooler welds into. Given the dimensions there my cooler is too broad for the space and to cut it broader would also

shorten the height of that particular piece.

Another concern is having to remove the entire manifold to then remove the rocker cover. A bitch simply for tappet adjustment and the like.

My thinking was to weld the correct size pipe into the plennum and join cooler to plennum via silicon hose, thus facilitating easy removal for access to rocker cover.

The other matter is, how easy is it to roll the large section A down and around sections B?

Given that it is 4mm aluminium is it easily acheivable by tacking / heating / clamping / tacking and repeat?

The upshot is I like the look of the unit, far better than I had in mind, and will run with it if It can be done without the cutout in part D.

Perhaps I can simply weld in a piece of plate when it hits the ground here?

I will put it to my brains trust today and get back to you. When do you intend to place your order? Will fit in with you if I can get a definitive answer this end.

Thanks mate!

This will be fine. Get the manifold all tacked together and then modify the opening to suit. You could also cut the coolers end tank at a point where the opening will be closer to that of the manifold.

Another concern is having to remove the entire manifold to then remove the rocker cover. A bitch simply for tappet adjustment and the like. You can take this design further like one of the ones pictured earlier and flange the cooler to the manifold. Although removing the manifold is really not a hard job to do.

My thinking was to weld the correct size pipe into the plennum and join cooler to plennum via silicon hose, thus facilitating easy removal for access to rocker cover. The idea of the large opening is to help slow the air down into the head to reduce vacuum locks in the runners. If you reduce this down from cooler then increase into the manifold you get velocity changes which arent ideal. If you are set on this method then it will need to be a 4" connection.

The other matter is, how easy is it to roll the large section A down and around sections B? There should be a template on one of those drawings which you bend the described peice to then tack into place. You can just print out the reference peice and use a bit of cardboard to bend the plate to.

Given that it is 4mm aluminium is it easily acheivable by tacking / heating / clamping / tacking and repeat? Use a press if you can and get to bend as close as possible prior to tacking. Being 4mm it will be an extensive exercise trying to tack, heat and bend.

Order has already been placed I just asked them to cut a couple as I figure I could probably move them on if needed. The cost doesnt change much whether I get 1 or 5 cut.

Thanks mate!
