I have a front elocker and 43% reduction gears, don't tell anyone you've got them (too late?), they'll look in wonder as you climb the unclimable, without the give away noise of an airlocker being turned on.

"How did you climb that hill so easily" they will ask, "Skill and ability" will be your reply ................. :D

On a serious note, my install resulted in diff oil getting past the grommet where the wires go into the diff and covering the underside of the diff and gearbox, messy. Had to be pulled out, hole redrilled and a new oversize grommet installed with appropriate sealant (not sure what), doesn't leak anymore (done at the installers expense)

Got the same setup, works very well and gives lots of confidence too.
No more slipping the clutch as low gear is low, and the silent activation of the locker... well its just sweet!

Picked it up last night and had to try it out. All I had was about a 200m length of gravel at the back of the local footy oval.
Talk about return to centre steering. Fugk. Going for a weekend trip next week. Learning curve here I come.

Its so cool when someone says you just cruised up there so controlled and didn't spin a wheel!

Busted too much stuff for the go hard or go home approach, prefer to drive home than put it on the trailer, done that it's not fun!

First little run with the front e-locker.
I've found that with it locked and a small turn the wheels will not only return to centre (if not firmly controlled) but even go a little passed centre an turn the opposite way for a few metres then go back to centre. I don't know but maybe some kind of wind up release. With a firm hand it is controllable. With the rear locked as well it is even more pronounced.
Tell you more as I learn more.

Just a characteristic of having all four wheels locked together. Something you wouldn't know about.

Toss up to weather my reduction gears or the e- locker get top billing as the best mod I've had done. But together they have turned my car into a weapon. Took it out on the weekend and it was great. Very very happy. There were other patrols there, one had reduction gears (with a conservative driver) the other stock(with a "let me at it" driver) The stock patrol did almost all we did but with so much more effort with lots of potential for serious damage were as the two cars with twin lockers just walked up most of it at just above idle. GREAT FUN!!
Still took it easy, still learning.

Heavy steering with the front locker in. I have found if your steering is heavy with the diff lock in you do not need it engaged because you have full traction with both wheels for it to be heavy. When you really need the locker you don't fell the steering as being heavy because you don't have full traction in both wheels all the time you don't feel the steering as being heavy. It feels quite normal to steer. Just a little note.

Soooo Chubba...... digging up an old thread ................ still happy with your front locker? With your experience of use what would you advise someone (me) considering getting a front e-locker (with std LSD in rear & std gear ratios) for a remote area touring vehicle. I see a locker, not so much as something to allow me to go more 'extreme', but rather as a means of reducing the risk of momentum related damage a long way from anywhere. Insurance if you like....... the sort of thing I'll be happy not to use, but find it reassuring to know it's there when I need it.

Chubba
25th September 2016, 10:23 PM
Cuppa. Sorry for the late response mate but I would say to anyone considering a front elocker in a patrol to go for it. If you can afford the coin do it. Getting on for the reasons you stated the front locker will deliver in spades.
Just do it!!
