Take it to a Panel Beater.

If not climb in from Passenger side and remove Front Drivers side Seat and you should be able to take off Door Trim

Quickest way is to drive straight into the side of it with a forklift and jiggle up and down a few times. Not only will you have a nice access hole in the drivers door, but you will also have one in the rear door should that fail in the future. Efficiency my friends.

Probably won't help if it the same problem I had with the actual locking mechanism being broken as the connecting rods won't unlock it.
Only suggestion is to see a panel beater as they must have seen it before or Mr Nissan as a safety issue. Good luck and let us know how it eventually works as it will happen to more and more of us over time.

If you do this you should have some access to the lock. The outer window trim does come off with the door shut.

Yeah they are a bugger to come off. Easier with the window down, the inside of the window trim had steel clips. So its made to not come off with ease.
Or do they have a screw in one end?.... Hmm I cant remember now.

Cuppa
4th March 2016, 04:13 PM
If it's as Wizard suggests then neither removing the inner trim or cutting a hole in the door sound like solutions, but I guess removing the trim & hoping to find a busted or misplaced connecting rod can't make things worse............. but I reckon a call to Mr Nissan first might be wise.

Should only take 2 minutes or less using the following tried and tested old school method

Go to (insert appropriate station name for your state here) Railway Station Car Park.
Stand near the vehicle and shout;
"I am not a Cop."
"I betcha $10 you can't open the Drivers Door on this car"
Only works at night tho... and don't take your wallet

Also works on siezed wheel nuts, don't even have to yell anything.
Just park up and walk off for 10 minutes.
When you get back the wheel nuts will be off.
Don't forget to have someone arranged to deliver 4 new rims, tyres and 2 dozen new nuts tho

Remove the door trim on the passenger side door so you can see what your aiming for mate. The mechanisms are all rods. Figure out the rod you need to manipulate on the passenger door and you should be able to come up with a plan for getting to it with the door shut.

Not sure that this is relevant, but in the past I owned a sucession of Ford XE's & XF's, well known for busted door handles. On numerous occasions I had to pull door skins off & muck around with connecting rods. The rods operated by the exterior handle & the rods operated by the internal handle were separate. Consequently if the external handle broke, the door could still be opened from inside, & vice versa. The fact that Growler is unable to open the door from both inside & outside unfortunately has me thinking that this is not a 'rod issue' & that getting access into the inside of the door is unlikely to resolve the problem.

If it is as Wizard posted, the problem part requires access to the actual locking mechanism from the rear outside of the door, & therein lies the problem.

That the front seat out, remove the trim from the pillar. It must have an opening as the seat belt retraction gear is in there.

There may be a way to get to the bolts holding the part to the pillar. Use a sabre saw with a metal blade or cold chisel to cut them off if you can't undo them.

I had not thought of that. By removing the catch that the door locks onto might be the way to go. Surely there are nuts holding the catch and not inserts so if accessible, it should be possible to undo nuts and latch will slide out with minimal damage when door is opened.

The problem I see with this that the lock in the door is still locked to latch on body work so something will be damaged if when hinges are removed and door opened from the front. If all else fails, this might be only way.

Pretty sure Apollofish suggested the possibility of attacking the problem via the door pillar? If the bolts which hold the ‘loop’ that the door latches onto are accessible from behind they may be able to be ground off?

I currently have a drivers door trim that is farkd and still a locked door until i buy a new mechanism $300 plastic piece of shit. When i have \that I'll drill the old farker out

Although I wouldn't wish Growler's experience on anyone there is possibly a positive to all this, at least for me. I mentioned previously in Wizard's thread (http://www.nissanpatrol.com.au/forums/showthread.php?36276-Warning-DX-door-locks&highlight=door+lock) that locking & unlocking my driver's door has always been a bit 'idiosyncratic' ever since I bought the car. Wizard commented that was how the problem on his had begun. However because it works each time, albeit with a bit of dicking around, turning the key in one direction & then the other, it's been easy to convince myself that it 'has some life left in it yet'.

Yesterday I was out & about & three times I had more trouble locking/unlocking than usual. Couldn't turn the key forwards or backwards, giving rise to a degree of panic that I'd 'done a Growler'. Thankfully persistence finally got the key to turn on each occasion, but three times has been enough to make me very reluctant to lock the door again. Were it not for Growler's experience, despite Wizard's warning, I'd likely have continued with fingers crossed, but have now decided that it would be very wise to fork out the $300 for a replacement latch assembly, & not to lock the door again until I do.

So thanks Wiz & Growler

This sound more like a worn key, if the key won't turn it is the barrel not the lock itself. My GU2 ST had the same problem, it worked fine with the remote but was a pain with the key without a remote (I didn't take the one and only remote on the boat incase it got wet). The key wears at the same rate as the ignition barrel, but the door barrels wear less as you usually use the remote.
Try some powdered graphite in the barrel.
If you have a new key, get a plain key cut for opening the doors, you can get this one wet, but clean any salt off it before inserting in the barrel.

Thanks for the thought. No remote on a DX. I'd like to think you are right, but I'm not convinced. Same key operates the passenger door as perfectly. When it opens the driver it works smooth as. The key doesn't look especially worn. Car has only done 170,000 kms, mainly country/outback driving. The pattern seems to fit with what Wizard said. I'll give it a squirt of graphite, but I'm not holding my breath on it being the solution. I'll also try my spare key which is as new.

Arrant lies! It is well known that Qlders are Gods gentlefolk. We would never suggest that Vics are ignorant enough to immolate a perfectly good beard.

It is however widely held in Gods country that VB is imbibed by our frozen cousins for it's inherent anti freeze properties!

Have you priced a replacement door from a wrecker? White will be easy to get. If it's say $100 for a door with no door card then I reckon I'd near on get a 4" grinder out and cut a big hole from the outside and open it. Then take the door off and replace it...... Probably would have done that about 2 months ago ;)

So today is the day. I've got shit to do first up this morning so it'll be a lunch time onwards job. Here's some pics of the new door latch. The plan is to destroy the plastic cover for want of better words to enable access to the internal workings. It will require drills pliers screwdriver and some extreme expletives
I would really like to find the designer of this system and cut their nuts out with a wooden spoon. I've been looking at this lock for the last hour seeing if precision drilling of the latch pin would work but then the snapped drill becomes a reality as mentioned in an earlier post. Also to cheer every other GU owner up. During my research this bastard of a problem exists on ALL Patrol models not just the DX. You have been warned

Mudnut see below the new one and where I've used a cold chisel to smash the plastic off just at the top where the levers are. I
didn't even bother trying to drill anything out. It was a s tight as a ducks arse and looked way too hard. The plastic was very brittle and only took two light taps and the top plastic and the lever that's connected to the outside door handle rod blew apart. The door then opened with the inside door handle. Easy as! Reinstalling the new one took 5 minutes very easy to do. All together shut the door and F*CK ME DRUNK the bastard wouldn't open again!!!! FARK FARK FARKkkkkkkkk!!!!!!! WTF! Back in removed the door lock rods and the door could open again???? WTF again??? So I've removed the mechanism and compared it with the old one thinking I'd put a connecting rod in the wrong spot but nup all good. Put it all back together latched the door manually without shutting it this time and sure enough the door handles won't reopen it WTF??! Remove the lock rods and wallah opens. Take the whole bloody thing off again and find there isn't bugger all movement in the new mechanism locking levers. There's a bloody problem with the new mechanism. But I can open the door just can't lock the bastard now. I will contact ptrolapart Monday and see what can be done. I can't send them this one back to changeover as I won't be able to drive me car so hopefully we can work something out. So result. Yep I can get in and out of the drivers door YAY! Can lock all the doors except the drivers side now Bastard but not the end of the world I've got secure parking. I have one door card that is 100% FUBAR oh well I don't have to practice my YOGA multiple times a day now. I might pull it apart tomorrow and have a look at it again just to make sure I haven't done anything stupid. If the new latch worked then all up time to do the job is less than an hour including taking out the front seat. Pretty easy really but destructive

ST's are electric and the DX is just key and linkages I think.
So the mighty DX has its demons as well.

Yes but the mechanism to lock is the same. Its not the actuation whether elec or manual of the lock thats the problem. Its the bastard internal workings that simply wear out

growler2058
8th May 2016, 09:19 AM
are you sure its not an issue with the locking rod linkage type thingy as opposed to the new plastic thing you bought............................

oh and by the way
[QUOTE=mudnut;675646]Has the linkage or door handle stretched or bent in any way, causing the mechanism not to move enough to operate?

No, even disconnecting all linkages the locking part doesnt move freely to lock

Maybe someone assembled it wrongly. I bought a brand new fuel sender for a Falcon once and it went from full to 1/2 back to full as some idiot had crimped both ends to the earth.

Try and get the supplier to email you a vid of another new assembly's movement.

Ok I have a theory why the lock didn't move when I had it out of the vehicle. Today I noticed I can't lock the door with the internal "button/lever" while the door is open. Stops you from locking your keys in the car I spose. The door can only be locked internally when it's closed or with the key from outside if that makes sense. Doesn't explain why it wouldn't move when it was shut yesterday or over the weekend whenever I played with it

Not happy. New door lock arrived in the mail (having taken 9 days to arrive from Townsville - bought it on ebay from a Queensland Nissan dealer) & it's damaged. Looks like it's been dropped, & has 2 broken pieces of plastic & a further fracture. If fitted I expect it would work, but would leave a gap for dust & crap to get inside the workings over time. Wish I'd taken it out of it's Nissan packet before leaving feedback. As it is I phoned the dealership this morning & the bloke in the parts department was pretty helpful, he has to consult with his boss but he agreed that I should be sent a replacement. Looks like I'll have to avoid locking my door for a while longer. Amazing how you just take the ability to secure your vehicle for granted until you can't!

Not sure if it needs to be returned yet. I told them I’d be happy to return it if they cover the postage, & they asked for a photo of the damage so they can make a claim to Nissan. The chap who will make the decision about it being returned isn’t there until next Tuesday. I have the impression that they may not want it back but will have to wait & see.

The well packaged & undamaged replacement door lock turned up in the mail today. Despite having learned since ordering it that I could have bought the same thing from Dubai for 1/3rd of the price, & the first one arriving damaged, I reckon that Parry Nissan in Townsville deserve a plug. I had already left them feedback (on Ebay) before I discovered the damage. Plenty of ebay sellers wouldn't have wanted to know once they had received the feedback, but Callum at Parrys was polite, helpful & professional, & sorted it all out quickly.

Hey Growler, i had a new stereo and alarm fitted to the GUIV last week an they had trouble with the drivers door. We have been opening it with a key for quite a long time as the Fob gave up the ghost. So now the alarm is hooked to the central locking and works from 1km away!! Love it! But the actuator on the drivers door keeps getting stuck in the alf position and i wonder if its on the way out? does this sound like what was happening to you before it sh1t itself?

Have you got a link to this unit? How much was it? does it include what the actuator for the central locking would manipulate? it looks to be.

growler2058

I know this might be a bit late, however I had the same problem with the door shut and locked and unable to open with any handles or keys. Also had the warning sign of the door not latching shut before it failed completely but chose to ignore it and spray WD40 into it. Wrong move. Should have pulled it out then.
I managed to unlock the door by remove the driver seat, removing the rubber surround at the lock end and partially removing the internal door panel so I could just see the U-bolt and latch between the door pillar and the door. I was able to remove some of the screws holding the fibro panel to the plastic moulding to get access to the door internals. Some damage to the fibro panel but repairable. I modified a small flat blade screwdriver by bending approx 25mm from the end to around 90 degrees in line with the flat blade.
78905
I was then able to insert the screwdriver under the U-bolt and managed to depress the locking pawl that latches the lock hook in place. You need to do this twice to get the door fully open. I practiced on the rear passenger door first.
A little better than hole saws and oxy ?
