91 GQ Fuel Gauge Problems

Hi Guys,

My fuel gauge on my 91 GQ never gets below a quarter. I've found a couple of threads suggesting checking the earthing or electric contacts - I suspect it is sludge in the bottom of the tank from dirty fuel here in Tanzania.

1. Is there a way I can check the bottom of the tank without removing the tank to see if it needs a cleanout?
2. Is the hatch in the picture below able to be used to pull out the float assembly for the gauge - again, can I check the electrics without removing the tank?

Yes, you can use that to have a look into the tank. Remove it and you'll know.

It sounds like there is a high resistance join in the circuit or a stray earth current. Before you open the tank, try checking the lugs in the connectors and spraying in WD40 or CRC. Also check the the plugs and sockets at the back of the gauge cluster.

Check that the earth connection at the tank is tight and clean. After giving the earth connection a clean, I found it was a little loose, so used a hammer and a centre pop to GENTLY make the centre piece clamp the lug solidly. I repeat I used Gentle tapping.

If you have to investigate further, buy an "O" ring for the sender before opening it.

The resistance of the sender unit according to my Haynes manual is at Full position: 5 Ohms. At Empty: 80 Ohms. The readings should rise and fall smoothly in between.

I also added a another earth wire from the rear of the chassis to the body and trailer plug.
