Folks looking for some guidance on a problem I have with my 99 y61 rd28eti, it's lacking any real power when faced with a hill and if I rev it to about 2500rpm I get a puff of blue smoke out the back and it seem to misfire a little afterwards. I don't think my waste gate is opening so I was wondering would it be too much pressure thus eventing three crank case into the turbo or is it the rings gone on one or more pistons ( I don't see any smoke at idle or below 2000rpm even at speed so I don't thinks it's the rings ) I'm getting a catch can this week but just check with you guys to see it it anything else or any thing I can do to improve its power

A mate of mine had similar problems with his 98 2.8. I don't know much of the process in-depth as I didn't see it, only talked about it but he did two things: 1) unplugged a wire for the emissions control module near the injector pump (about the size of your thumbnail) and this gave him power back instantly. 2) resolder a dodgy connection in the maf sensor. He said that the engines are known to need those two things

Hi there Irish
Sounds like your turbo might be worn and when its making boost leaking oil past the seal easy to check by removing intake pipe and rocking the impeller shaft to See if it makes contact with the compressor housing have you got some means of measuring your boost?

At the moment I've no way to measure the boost have a gauge ordered alright . I did strip the intercooler pipe off and seen oil in them alright so I check the pcv line and it too had oil so my initial thoughts where that the oil was vent into the turbo. I've notice some staining on the maf sensor as well. I don't think my patrol got the love it deserved

Dis-connect the battery,,,,,when you have done that clean the maf.
I'd even go as far as cleaning inside the intercooler,
throw some love at it. Blue smoke would be oil

I'm also dealing with a lack of power from my 99 RD28eti. Only mine is coming right after a full engine rebuild - complete with new turbo. I hauled about 700kg up a long winter road without problems before the rebuild, but now it's struggling to get up a hill empty. I swapped out my injector pump to a mechanical one, so emissions, MAF, etc. aren't a factor in my case. I think it's cam timing so I'm trying to sort it out now. Let me know what you find out with yours.

At the moment my issue appears to be the turbo as it doesn't seem to turn freely
issue is get it off, feckin bolts are seized solided

If the turbo is completely shot, don't even mess with rebuilding it - just replace it. I did it on mine and am very happy with the results.
