Just bought my 1989 4.2l non turbo diesel. patrol wagon. To find out it goes through approx 20l/100km!
What ways can I conserve/ improve fuel efficiency? Particularly cheap ways as I am a poor P plater.!

First you need to head over to the intro section and say gday then you need to give more info about your car... Has it been tuned properly.. what turbo what size wheels and so on.

One of the best mods is the right foot.

Got larger dia tyres (32/33/35) than standard and factory diff ratios?
Either put 31's on or change the diff ratios

Got wider tyres?
Go narrow, less rolling friction

Tyre pressure?
38 to 42 minimum depending

Roof rack?
Take it off

Brick tied to right foot?
Take it off

Blowing black smoke?
That means overfuelling/poor spray pattern so Pump and Injector service

Heavy accessories IE steel bars, etc?
Pretty much just have to suck it up.

Best average fuel consumption you can expect is probably 15 LPH

Na my stock td42 I could get 11/100 out of.. that was cruzing at 90k/h though lol..
I average about 15 with roof rack, 33's, and all my draws etc..
About 18 if towing the dove or loaded to the max..

Being non turbo how much smoke does it blow when you stick the boot in?

I'd go get it dynoed first then see what you can acheive
Use a GPS to take your mileage as the speedo may be out using
31" tyres.
Tyre pressures play a huge role as pointed out.
OOI how many Ks do you get from a full main tank???
