So I've had a few questions about car detailing so thought I'd make a new thread on it. Please post your process and especially any tips or tricks you have learnt

I polished and waxed my car yesterday and posted to what has made you happy today thread.

Here are the photos I posted

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/lucus30/IMG_4124_zpsdqhn2xap.jpg (http://s868.photobucket.com/user/lucus30/media/IMG_4124_zpsdqhn2xap.jpg.html)

http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/lucus30/IMG_4132_zpslvzhkvpm.jpg (http://s868.photobucket.com/user/lucus30/media/IMG_4132_zpslvzhkvpm.jpg.html)
http://i868.photobucket.com/albums/ab243/lucus30/DSC_0746%201_zpson1p22i4.jpg (http://s868.photobucket.com/user/lucus30/media/DSC_0746%201_zpson1p22i4.jpg.html)

So I might be a little anal about this but here is my process. I find this little flowchart (http://howto.carcareproducts.com.au/news/pdf/14) something handy to follow

Process

1. Spray no acid wheel cleaner on the wheels and let it soak for 5 minutes~ (any brand I've found they are all very similar). For really filthy wheels you might need to agitate them a little before spraying off
2. Spray with a autobrite snowfoam lance connected to my karcher pressure washer. Here is a picture of the snowfoam gun and the Mrs old car after about 5 minutes of soaking

6463264633

3. Hose off with Karcher starting at the wheels
4. Wash the car using the 2 bucket method which is explained here (http://howto.carcareproducts.com.au/2009/09/23/washing_and_drying_using_2_bucket_method). I don't have a set detergent but at the moment I am using duragloss 901 but I've also used Meguiars soft wash and wash and wax. Obviously then use the Karcher to hose off

By this stage I do different things depending on if its a normal wash or I'm going to be polishing. For now I'll stick to normal

5. While the car is still wet I spray with either duragloss aquawax or meguairs ultimate quick wax and use a waffle weave drying towel or a shammy to wipe it down
6. Give the tyres a shine using meguiars endurance tyre shine gel and the windows a clean on the outside with stones invisible glass

If i was to polish and wax this is what I do

5. Shammy car with either sythentic shammy or waffle weave drying towel
6. Clay bar my car using this process (http://howto.carcareproducts.com.au/2009/06/29/how_to_clay_your_car)
7. This is where i crack out the DA polisher. I use a DAS-6 PRO but would next time probably get the supercheap one (http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Rockwell-ShopSeries-Car-Polisher-Multi-Function-180mm-600-Watt.aspx?pid=344537&menuFrom=1021675#Recommendations) the beauty of DA polishes is that they are easy to use but still powerful enough for paint correction without destroying your paint job. I use the polisher with meguiars ultimate compound following this process (http://howto.carcareproducts.com.au/2009/09/17/machine_polishing_to_achieve_paint_correction)
8. Some people would then follow it up with meguiars ultimate polish on the DA but i tend to skip this step and go straight to waxing/sealant
9. I use meguiars ultimate liquid wax but honestly I think wax/sealants are always going to be a personnel preference so chuck it on the DA again with a finishing pad

And that's it for the outside

For the inside I don't do anything special but I'll list steps briefly for completeness sake

1. Wipe inside all the doors, boot and bonnet with a microfiber wet towel
2. Vacuum with a wet/dry shop vac
3. Clean windows with stones invisible glass
4. Wipe/clean dash and console and any other trim. Using a cheap paint brush to get into those tight corners and air vents. I then use 303 aerospace protectant ( this stuff I Love) to coat all the trims, dash and console
5. Spray a few puffs of deodoriser over the seats

I'm sure I've missed a few things but I'll update the thread as I remember them.

I this i might be obsessed. Here is my cleaning shelf

Edit:

Also I should say how often I do this stuff

Normal wash 1 X a fortnight
Wax I try to do 4 -5 X a year
Polish only when its looking dull
Clay bar maybe twice a year

My process is pretty simple these days.
Wash, dry and vaccum (if needed).

Pre wife and kids it was a 1/2 job.

Now I gotta pull out the old pic of previous cars to find a clean one.

Yeah good ones. I mentioned the paint brush which is really handy. A small detail brush is great for the air vents and small joins on the dash

Jeezus, lucus... that leaves my 3 step detailing method in last place...

1. Exterior - Wait till BOM forecasts 80% chance or rain or higher and park car outside for duration
(note, remove antenna if lightning forecast)

2. Interior - Next time an air flow is available equivalent to the vehicle driven at a speed of 100 KPH or more (TD42 Owners may need to find a steep downhill run and 2.8's will have to wait for cyclone season) fully open all 4 windows simultaneously for 30 seconds.

3. Windscreen Glass - that difficult to remove gum residue from Canarys' can easily be covered over by Aus Flag, Eureka or Ned Kelly stickers from Super cheap.
Other glass - don't bother, the natural buildup has several purposes
a) its free
b) its compliant with ADR tinting regs so reduces Windscreen glass gum residue
c) it is 5 star eco friendly rating with no additives, preservatives, toxic substance or harmful side effects
d) passengers and kids who get bored can doodle on it for hours
(note - avoid derogatory doodling about mermaids or coppers as it increases the likelyhood of windscreen glass gum residue but
Vegans, Prados, Greenies and anti-stick family themes are all fair game)

I try and do all the above at least once in the time I own a Car

I need a really good tyre/rim cleaner for my g6et. It has 6 pot brembo brakes and the pads just leak breakdust constantly
I have got maguires NXT cleaner and polish. Its been overcast and miserable since I bought the car so I dont really know how shiney it is. The only thing is that I haven't seen the water bead with other polishs like it does with the NXT polish
It is due for a cut or at least a clay block

What do you use for chrome??

Aren't those rims alloy, not chrome? There's a product I've seen in the shop that is ment to put a barrier on the mags to stop brake dust sticking.. Can't think of the name though. It's probably similar to a silicone spray

DO NOT use amour all on any of your cars unless you are selling.
Amour all is BAD, BAD,BAD.
It will dry out your rubbers/plastics and eventually crack

I use maguiars hot rim cleaner. Works quite well, still need to give the rims a quick rub down after you wash off the cleaner, but as far as I know, there are no 'no touch' whee cleaners.

yeah mate $300 would set you up nicely. Could do lots of home detailing for that price

I'm going to assume that people have the basic car washing stuff so will skip that.

DA polisher $109 http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Rockwell-ShopSeries-Car-Polisher-Multi-Function-180mm-600-Watt.aspx?pid=344537#Recommendations
A few pads for the polisher $30
Clay Bar kit $54.99 http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Mothers-Clay-Bar-Kit-4-Piece.aspx?pid=10774#Recommendations
Meguiars ultimate compound $34.99 http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Meguiar-s-Ultimate-Compound-450mL.aspx?pid=214309#Recommendations
Meguiar's Ultimate Liquid Wax $75.99 http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online-store/products/Meguiar-s-Ultimate-Liquid-Wax-473mL.aspx?pid=295153#Recommendations

Total 304.99

And honestly if you bought this stuff on sale you would get it for probably near $200. You'd be crazy to pay full price as they are always having sales on it

Using the clay bar, polisher and wax you'd be surprised at how good you could get any car to look

Looking at Meguiar's products today and they all say 'hand use only'.

The 2 that i suggested I use with my DA polisher but also the meguiars website suggest its ok to use with a DA polisher

http://www.meguiars.com.au/surface-prep/ultimate-compound/
"This is the safest, most effective way to remove scratches, swirls, oxidation, water marks, blemishes etc. by hand or using a dual action/random orbit machine"

http://www.meguiars.com.au/polish-protect/ultimate-liquid-wax/
"Also suitable for use with a DA POLISHER."

Maybe some of the others are not suitable.....

I just dropped into my local SCA and they had stuff all really..
I may grab the buffer off the shelf but I may have to get in the polish gear..
They didn't even have other pads to suit the DA.. only to suit others screw on type setups..
Anyway.. I know the local was useless..

Just make sure it's the DA polisher. I think they call it multifunction as their rotary looks similar and this can burn through paint easily.

Watch lots of YouTube videos on technique and you'll be right.

Hey mate

If you weren't in taz I'd offer to give it a crack for you. If it's all superficial as in not past the clear coat I think it could come up pretty good. Hard to tell but it would come up better than it was.

I'd start with a course grit compound, medium grit, low grit and then finishing polish to shine it up. Finish with a wax

You'd need a DA at the minimum I would think

taslucas
25th February 2016, 09:31 PM
Ok so you mean: course, medium then low grit cutting compound?
. Apply course then buff off, medium then buff off low then buff off then a good quality polish and buff off?

Yup.... Give it a go
Obviously you start with the least amount of cutting you think you'd need but looks like it needs a bit of work. So start coarse if it comes up all alright you might be able to skip medium

Or if you just wanted to test it out

Meguiars ultimate compound followed by ultimate polish. See what it comes up like you might be happy enough not to do any more

I have had one of the ones in the top link, and it was terrible, easier to do it by hand. And rotary polishers if not used correctly can damage the paint quite easily, but do give the best results.

I now have one of these

Its great, i bought it in a kit with polish and a bag. Significantly better then cheap polisher or by hand. Plus it way easier.

Well I only tried a section of bonnet (I have another bonnet that'll be going on, long story). I decided not to go with the kitten stuff because it said it wasn't for clear coats. The section I did with the meguires deep crystal (by hand) definitely looks better and feels better but I can still see faded type sections in the right angle. It looks like it's deeper. (I say faded for lack of a better word...)
Thinking that it might be the start of the common clear coat problem with those commys

Sounds like a good decision. I wouldn't use anything that says not for clear coats.

If it is past the clear coat nothing but a respray will fix it

I'll buy some light cut and polish and give it a go but I reckon it may be past it. As I said, I have another bonnet that I'm getting painted for it so I do mind testing polishes on the existing bonnet

I saw on one of the car tv shows that Meguires had a product that rids the paint of oxidation marks.
My bonnet comes up a treat but here and there you can see oxidation marks, you cant see them,
but I can and thats why its annoying. None of these treatments are not cheap either, Tried that
orange bottle once a year stuff, I think thats a porky pie, lol

When you say oxidation, what do you mean? Little rust spots? Dry water spots?

If its not too late coul they spray the front leading edge of the bonnet with a rubberized product
to protect it from stone chips, same colour of course, or some Mylar tape.
Pic is my bonnet with 50mm mylar tape, near on invisable

Nah the reason I'm fitting a new bonnet is because it's got a buldge welded in. All for looks haha! And I don't reckon a strip will look nice. The new paint will look good and last well with a bit of attention.

Anybody got some tips on how to get glitter off of leather seats?
Amy was driving for a hens night last weekend and one of the girls wore a glittery skirt. Now her car is full of f**king glitter and it's a prick to get out.
Have used a wet cloth and that did a bit but not much.
Thinking I will use sticky tape next.

Ps. No, there were no strippers in the car.

...."one of the girls"....ha!

Maybe one of those sticky roller things might help? Or wrap tape backwards around your hand and pat the seat

I appreciate the effort you put into it to achieve a great result, but for me, life's too short and I can think of more enjoyable things to do. ( but I would pay you to do mine )

Burn it. It never comes out.

My missus wrapped up presents at Christmas with glittery ribbon, I still have glitter in my car. And house. Let's just say I was not impressed.

Mate, as long as you enjoy doing it, then it doesn't matter what I think.
