So our 5th gear grinds. We need to get the spline and bearing replaced. What is the easiest and cheapest way of getting it done?.

When you say grinds. How? Do you have drive in 5th? Age of vehicle too may help.
The early gu boxes had an issue with the internal spline in the 5th gear to strip and just basically free wheel on the shaft.
So Nissan have an update kit which is a new shaft and fifth gear with a larger/ longer spline.
There is two different kits though, depending on the tooth count of 5th gear.
Probably best to take the car to a specialist for this I reckon.

its a 98 Gu 2.8 running a Rd28. When you put it into 5th it gets that grind that sounds like a bearing failing.

So the first quote ive got to do the spline kit is 2 grand.
I got a quote from a wrecker for a replacement gearbox with 120km on it for $1500.
Which now leads me to the question. What is a second hand gearbox off a rd28 worth knowing it needs a $350 spline kit?.

Just remember you might be just buying another rooted box if you go second hand.
Atleast a with a full rebuild it's all done.
Does the rebuild quote come with new synchros too? Or is this just the spline kit and nothing else? Like new bearings in the entire box etc etc.
4th and reverse synchros arebthe two worst in these boxes.

I had a secondhand box for my RB30, (which is the same block as an RD, so I am assuming a similar box) fitted for $1800. Be prepared to have a $400 bond on the box, as some wreckers want your old set up back. BS but that was what they tried to pull on me. One wrecker in Melbourne does a partial reco, with three month warranty.

Do you know who the wrecker in Melbourne is?.

No synchros just the spline kit. the gearbox will come with a 3 month warranty

Now you're getting the grey matter going as it was a while ago. All I can remember is that it was a 4x4 wrecker in the eastern burbs, sorry.

You could try Niss 4x4 wreckers in Brooklyn. If you can get past their obruptness, their prices are pretty good.

Maybe try and get a 2.8 box and a later zd30 box side by side and see if you can fit the later box up to the 2.8??
Still should be cheaper but you'll get the newer 5th gear setup and be worry free

Make sure it is a GU3 or later GU2 had the weak splines, mine cost $3k for a full rebuild 8 years ago, was better than new.
I was warned about gearbox places quoting low to do the job & then once it is out, they find more needs to be done & you can't just go & drive you car away and say no.
Get a quote for a full rebuild, main shaft kit, synchros & bearings, it might cost a bit more but if there is a grinding noise there are going to be bits of metal all through the box.

Pretty sure that the 2.8 gearbox is different to the 3 Litre Di and 4.2 Gearbox, and that it didn't have the inherent 5 gear spline fault of the early GU's with the bigger box.... This is just co-incidence that it is a similar fault.

I have never had the 2.8, and don't understand them as intimately as others that have owned them, but I don't know of a 5 gear problem with the 2.8. I personally think that the box from the wreckers with 120 K's on it would be a pretty good buy, if you could confirm the k's are truly correct and the box is actually from that vehicle. That is the trouble with buying bits from wreckers with a million trucks - they could tell you anything to get a sale ( Not saying they do, but I imagine it would be hard to verify which truck it came from )

Probably preaching to the converted, but towing in fifth in any five speed box will put a lot of pressure on the gear and shaft, so that may be the cause. That is why fourth is a better choice as it is a 1:1 ratio and is the strongest configuration.

That's really cheap. I got a price of around $1800 to reco my gq box..
Was around $3000 to do box clutch, touch uo the fly and rear main seal..
