Hey all,
The big girl is coming to 300,000k and i would like to know the thoughts on what i should attach service wish to keep her up to spec. I have done the front wheel bearings, swivels are nice and dry i.e no oil leak. Was thinking of doing the rear wheel bearings?

Depends.
I'm guessing it's full floating rear wheel bearings, since it's a TB42.
If you can't feel any bearing play, hopefully it should be good.
I would repack the bearings. But, if you're going to all that trouble, since it's a full floating bearings, it may be worth replacing the bearings, 'cos they're not that expensive.
All depend on whether you're heading off for a long trek or not.
You might wanna replace the brake oil, if you haven't done it for few years.
Recommendation is every two years for brake oil. I haven't done mine for few years, and about to do it.
I would also do a compression test. leak down test, etc to ensure the head gasket/head etc is up to scratch.
Diff oil, tranny oil change is also a good thing if you haven't done it for years.
Check the uni joints for any play and replace them as necessary.
Check all the rubber bushes related to suspension and replace as necessary.
After that, a wheel alignment would be a good idea.

Don't know if manual gearboxes have filters in the tranny but if it has or is an auto I'd do the filter as well.

No, AFAIK, manual gearboxes don't have filters. Yes, if it's an auto, it's a very good idea to service the auto tranny. Replacing the oil and the filter is something we can do without having to know the intricacies of auto trannies.
Auto trannies need regular maintenance, comparing to manuals. One of the reasons that I've been avoiding autos for years. :)

Do the valve clearances.
Change all fluids. .
Maybe change out radiator hoses and belts.

plugs, leads, dissy cap, rotor button, oil/filter, air filter, valve clearance, replace belts, clean throttle body, air filter, flush coolant. gearbox transfer and diff oils, check brakes and replace fulid, replace fuel filter, check/repack front wheel bearings, change clutch fluid
thats what id be looking at doing unless any of the bigger ones have been done recently

Thanks for all that guys pretty much what i thought, just wondering if there was any hidden stuff. I have to get a RWC changing from Vic rego to Qld. All good apart from the gas cert which I am getting check tomorrow and a leaking welsh plug on the exhaust side.
Thanks Again

Check out this thread started by me. I had to do the damn welch plug three times. It kept leaking until I used epoxy the third and last time. It's better to do it good the first time. PITA job to having to do over and over.

I haven't been aware that, to switch to QLD rego you need an RWC. Is that an RWC from VIC or QLD?
I'm not sure the logic behind asking for an RWC to change from one state to the other.
But, then, many of the taxes and tariffs have nothing much to do with logic. :)

AFAIK every State requires a RWC or Compliance Check when you change rego.
WA which doesn't have annual RWC's requires one for first rego of an interstate vehicle.
The only exemptions are some States and Territories will waiver a full RWC on vehicles less than 5 years old but you still need compliance inspections

Probably too busy.
So many cars coming over the border due to no RWC requirement.

The biggest PITA I am having at the moment is getting the gas tank re certified as it is out of date. No one does it here in Gladstone so it is off to Bundy or Rocky. All the rest is fine.

If there is any external rust on the lpg tank they wont recert it.
As the gq tanks are external rust will occur

There is the slightest bit where the bash plate has rubbed, I was told that as long as it was not more than 10% it would pass. I am taking it up to Rockhampton tomorrow to have it tested, here's hoping. If not anyone know were to get a replacemnet up this way.

Slight amount of rust that has not eaten into the body should be ok.
You can always drop the tank, sandpaper it and spray it.
It's better to drop the tank yourself and have it ready.
Then you can call a mobile tester or take it to the tester.

If you have to do a welch plug, do a proper job and replace them all (that you can access externally) with brass ones while you're at it. If one is leaking they are all suspect.
Remember to change your coolant every 3 years to avoid internal sludge and corrosion which is what hits the welch plugs, but with brass ones it isn't so critical.
When you service the Auto, use Transmax Z or similar full synthetic oil. Better auto function and takes a lot more abuse to burn it than mineral oils.
Changing the brake fluid sounds silly when you first hear it, but when you see the results of not changing it at least every 5 years (pitted calipers, cylinders and pistons) it's crazy not to change it. If your running a manual remember to do the clutch system too.
Little things usually required for around 300,000k are -
grease your brake caliper slides and check the boots that protect them
check for chassis cracks around the rear spring towers and steering box mounts
check the shock absorbers are all working properly and not leaking oil
if the fan belts are off, check the bearing play in the water pump and alternator bearings
do a visual check on the body mount rubbers
adjust the barn doors - the one holding the spare will drop a bit - hinge adjustment is under the door trim.Check the hinge and mounting for wear/cracks.
replace the bonnet rubber stops (these are always worn out) unless you've already done them - under $10 a pair.
If the windows are rattly you can also replace the baily rubbers
Is there a water leak into the front carpet ? - clear the drains in the vent chamber under the windscreen.
Rear slider windows should be showing signs of rust or leakage by now. Aluminium sliders & rubbers cost $440/pair
And if you're fussy about rust like me - give it a good drown in fish oil (every 5 years)
Be interested to know how many of the items mentioned here apply to your Patrol - a reply would be nice.

Oh - and check the bypass hose between the water pump and bottom of the thermostat housing (mine blew last night)
