These guys joined the forum 2 weeks ago and sent out a Spam PM to many many members. they had a Zero Post count. To anyone that received this PM i apologies. I sent them a PM asking them to join the forum as Vendors and received NO RESPONSE. so i gave them a Permanent BAN. I was Furious that someone would use our pm system like that. Banned They were. I will not be buying one on that basis alone.

@ Kallen wouldn't it be neater and lighter if you use the centre of the spare wheel to design something
Just saying lol

Customer is quite well built and none of use are getting younger.
I'm doing alloy instead of stainless for mine so weight will be maybe a kilo..
Plus powder coat works much better with alloy than stainless..
If he goes that way..

Yeah check the ad out. It hooks over the top of the small barn door and clamps onto the bottom of it.

Yep, mounts onto the back door, it seems like a good design, and with my dodgy knees and back, it seems a lot safer than climbing up the spare wheel to get to the roof

This style of door ladder is very very common of Japanese exports vehicle into NewZealand. Safaris over there are generally grey imports and more than half of them have a factory ladder fitted. GUs also have them. I have been surprised why we eng see them here.

I like the idea of a ladder, as it can be a pain getting up on the roof. But how would one of these go if you have a rear wheel carrier? Probably wouldn't fit due to the lack of clearance. Are there any other options?

This is something I have thought of too, as a rear wheel carrier is on my wish list, a side ladder would probably work, although three dogs said he thinks they're illegal where he lives now so it would pay to check first. By looking at the pics (my ladder hasn't arrived yet), I don't think a wheel carrier would fit with the ladder I've ordered, but I won't know till I get it fitted up.

I haven't thought of a firm solution yet, although when we do our big trip if necessary I'll have to put my second spare on the roof.

Can I suggest you send biggqwesty a message and see what he can knock up, he might be able to figure out a solution, I believe he'll be making some ladders early next year.

That's a good point about the swing aways.
What sorta room do you guys have between door and tyre carrier?
I can make to fit but if your only going to get a toe on it then it's pretty pointless.
But I'm having a brain wave..
Who has a dual tyre carrier or jerry can holder and has a arb or similar bar PM me.. I'll need some pics. .

These rear ladders have been around for years and years, one I remember had a small ladder from the centre of your spare wheel on door.
On top of the wheel was a shelf [600mm x 200mm] you could stand on this was fitted via the captive nuts in the door.
Easy enough to knock one up, Ill put a drawing here later for you to look at.
So basically a two piece ladder
That shelf was also to strap some gear to as well ,
very easy to make if you're handy with a welder and
can read a tape measure

Not sure if I'm allowed to post a link to that other Patrol forum:D? But I Googled this solution: http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/diy-modifications-accessories-40/gu-rear-door-ladder-188674/ Looks a bit close to the door?

Here's a rough pic but you'll get the idea, you could make it from 20x20x2 rhs
fully weld all joints and either spray or powder coat, easy enough to make so it will
fit all tyre sizes.
For swing aways either make it to suit the front or back should be plenty of room,
you only need clearance for 25mm if using 25x25x2 rhs

I like this idea, it would work on all patrols just laser cut a plate
that fits behind the rear number plate light and go from there

Gday all, I got my ladder in time for Chrissie and it fitted up nicely. Thought I'd throw a pic up in case anyone was interested in seeing it.

Apologies for the angle in the photo, photography isn't my strong suit!

It feels strong and looks well made, very tidy welds and good powder coating, I'm very happy with it. Makes getting up and down from the roof a breeze. One minor thing I have noticed is that the top of the door can flex a tiny bit when I climb up, but it isn't much and touch wood doesn't seem to affect anything. It is quite light and doesn't affect door operation at all. I am not going to miss climbing up and down the spare wheel [emoji3]

Patrol'n came by yesterday and showed me the set up. Got to climb on someone else's Patrol for a change. Thanks Leigh. I'm placing an order - need I say more. Great idea and appears to be well made. Downsides are all controllable, don't climb on it when the door is open and don't put you feet through enough to kick the panel - common sense really.
Thanks again Leigh. Typical meet up of Patrol owners though, quick look at the ladder then bonnets up for half an hour or so.

Thanks for the reminder mate, it came with some grip tape, in my haste to get it on and try it out I forgot to put the grip tape on...

That and a perhaps a few Amber memory inhibitors that I consumed at Christmas had something to do with forgetting! Lol

Got mine last week and have mounted it. I will chuck a pic up over the weekend. No complaints about the product, a few about WA deliveries though. 3 days from Qld to Perth, 4 days from Welshpool freight depot to Osborne Park.

At least you have the ladder now, we just got back last week from a week long trip, that ladder has transformed using the roof rack for me, makes using the roof rack a breeze.

More useful for old farts like me would be a fold down bottom step so I can get from the ground to the first rung easier. Mine is a GU, not as bad on the GQ as they have the step set into the bumper. Usually I am loading to go away so I can get up on the trailer A frame. might have a look around at boat places.

Feels OK Leigh - just the normal things like don't climb on it with the door open and I think I will get someone to pass up stuff for loading as I think climbing up while carrying a ton of stuff would be asking for trouble. Wouldn't mind an extension to get from the ground to the bottom rung though. I think Biggqwesty has some ideas on that score.

Chaps, I've welded up a small barn door for my Y61 GU Patrol, but now trying to figure out the connections to the door. The frontrunner one has three riv nuts down the bottom and two up top - my reckoning is that the top two go through two layers of door steel (where it's folded double) and three go through what I think is a single layer of panel steel.

Does anyone have any experience with these fitments being enough for normal use? 100kg person on the ladder carrying stuff?

I'm not good enough with the welder to do a folded over hook type thing on the top (which I'd prefer of course) - unless anyone has some particularly easy ideas to execute.
