View Full Version : Question about fuel, boost and intake...

A little background on my setup. In my 99 GU RD28Ti, I have swapped out the standard electronic injector pump for a mechanical one, all injectors are newly rebuilt, and I have a brand new turbo (factory size). EGR is blocked and butterfly removed.

My Problem:
The Patrol is running a bit rich at the moment. I can smell the diesel inside the cabin. While I am pleased with the power I'm getting, the fuel economy is down the drain. Granted, I am in the middle of cold winter (-20C and lower) so it is idling and warming a bit more and most of the driving is in town, but it seems excessive. According to my odometer, I've only gone about 120km and I'm down to almost 1/2 a tank.

My question is this - I have a manual boost controller that I haven't fitted yet. If I fit that and wind a bit more boost, would that give me a cleaner burn and more power output for the amount of fuel that the pump is sending? Would the fuel economy be any better with just doing that on a stock intake, or should I go ahead and wind back the fuel a bit as well?

My hesitation in winding back the fuel is that my idle RPMs are already in the 750-800 range which is normal according to the manual. If I wind the fuel back, won't I also decrease the idle RPMs?

Hope this is clear and someone can point me in the right direction?

Easy enough to try IMO economy may improve as fuel burn efficiency improves,
Idle is set isnt it???

How different are your pumps to the TD42 pumps? Cause my pump has a screw that adjusts the idle sepurately. So as the idle drops from decreasing fuel, you can wind it back up again by cranking the idle screw.

I think it's the same with this pump. I'll have to look a bit closer to see if there are 2 adjustment screws

Hi you should set your fuel amount by measuring the exhaust gas temperature aim for between 500-600 degrees Celsius at full boost
