Hi guys.

I'm in the market for a gu patrol and I'm just looking for opinions on what everyone thinks is a better option.
I'm stuck between a 2000 model gu with a td42t and 288000 kms for $24000 or a 2008 crd with about 110000kms for about $25000 to $28000.
Thanks in advance.

And do you think like they are fair prices for the vehicles. I'm in Perth too btw

I agree with Stropp, only because I own one, and I've never driven a CRD, so it's not really an opinion.. As for price that is about what I paid 3 years ago, with no extras.

You're comparing a 15 and a 7-year-old vehicle and 180ooo km apart, no brainer for me mate.
With the CRD make sure its not a mine vehicle as there are lots a few grand cheaper than the market value

Another here for the td42.
Most reliable engine with proper maintenance..
Mines pushing 525 thou and still going well.

For me it would be the TD42 every time, just because I don't want in the back of my mind to always be worried about the grenade going off. I reckon it will hold its value better too.

I own a couple of TD42Ts. a GQ and a GUIV.

Out of those 2 choices id drive the CRD mate. that is top dollar for a Series 1 GU because it has a TD42T in it. likely not intercooled. You are paying a premium i think. Growler sold his GQ TD42T for a CRD and has NEVER looked back. Loves it. Nisspat above is also a big fan. They pull hard.

The TD42T is Old school. Reliable. Never lets you down. Gets Hot when towing up big hills. Needs lots of money spent on it to make it go Hard. If you know that it really has been serviced every 5000kms thats nice but i bet it hasn't.

Would i sell mine..... No. But i own them. ;) If i didn't, would i buy a CRD? Absolutely. The 2008 will be much nicer inside and the drive train (Tough) will have 170,000km less on everything. Your Wife will be much happier in the 2008 CRD.

TD42's are more of a reliable option IMO. It's not uncommon for people to clock well over 500,000 k's on them. CRD is more complex and way more expensive to repair if you do have dramas.

Just take them both for a drive and go with your gut instinct mate. I'm sure there's good arguments on both sides of the fence here so it just depends on which one feels better for you.

I bought a CRD,my GQ that I owned aswell sat in a shed for nearly 2 years....owning both at the same time we always hopped in the GU..and there was nothing wrong with my GQ,i sold it for 6 grand and the bloke that owns it has driven from the bottom end of WA and is now in Cairns..it's all down to personal choice..i owned both at the same time and love my(the wifes) CRD

Horses for courses, love my tdi 4.2 GU 3 , but i like the truck feel , and the simplicity , I've never had overheating issues, or actually met anyone that has, and i pulled 3.4t of boat, 2t off van over Cunninghams Gap and
toowoomba ranges , and many trips towing the van in soft sand over long distances, but there are also thousands of grey nomads pulling large vans all over the country behind crds and di's with no dramas , like i said each to their own .

What are you going to use it for?

Heavy towing or very remote touring I would lean towards the TD42 otherwise the '08 CRD any day of the week

Not going to be towing anything really. Maybe a camper trailer occasionally. And will be doing it up as a tourer but won't be hitting the Simpson desert up anytime soon. I'm leaning more towards the crd.

All depends on what's in the 2000 patrol for accessories. Motor aside, accessories are a massive cost. Big difference in age, stuff all in looks, inside and out. If the 2000 model has newer or better suspension than the 2008 for example, it will be better to drive.
You need to look at other things other than the motor.

I have a TD42 - love it to death
but I brought it for long range long time touring

for beetling around the city and the occasional towing of a camper - go the CRD

it really is about horses for courses

as Mudski said - also depends on what fruit is on either of them - if the 2000 is all set up for touring maybe better value than the CRD if its standard
but if its not...........

Go for the newer one, or have a look at the auctions & get an even newer one.
Service history is everything with any turbo, my last ZD30 had 260000 on it when I sold it, oil & filter changed every 5000.
The TD42 is loved by everyone that owns one, the first time I drove a ZD30 I was impressed by how well it pulls

Cass,

I would get the one you love the most ... look at both, and drive both, and then choose from there.

I loved my 4.2 Turbo to bits and had it for years.

It was a massive gamble but I sold my 4.2 for a 3 Litre Patrol, and I haven't looked back.

Did I miss the 4.2... yes a bit at first as the torque characteristics are better offroad (especially over the early 3 litre Di Diesels), but I wouldn't sell my CRD for one now

the other half bought a 1999 td42 12 months ago with touring mods and under 300k on the clock for $24,0000, id say its a fair price for the one your looking at, We're searched high and low for a clean 4.2, for reliability factors, and we ended up with this one complete with arb air.compressor, warn winch, arb dual batterys and he even threw in the engel on a fridge slide in the back. I'd lean more towards the 4.2 but at the end of the day its you thats driving it haha.
