Ok so today i decide to look at my coolant levels (yes i should of done it earlier ). So the lower reservoir tank was practically empty except for a few drops. The upper tank is about 90 percent full assuming it needs to be filled right to the cap? As i see no fill line ? The lower tank cap was broken and basically just sitting on, could this cause spillage you think?
So I contacted previous owner, he said he does not know what coolant is in it, i bought the genuine 1ltr nissan coolant today and a new plastic cap, woukd it be safe to mix it with distilled water and top it up and see if the levels remain the same ?

Dont mix coolants it will turn to gel and give you all kinds of grief.
Ive been having a bit of trouble with mine leaking due to the coolant tank with the yellow cap being loose.
all good now so hope it wont leak any more
Give it a flush and start fresh

Mixing Red and Green is a no no.
Mixing green with green is OK 99% of the time.
Some people get confused between concentrate and pre-mix so double check.
A small top up with water is usually OK.
Modern systems shouldn't loose coolant as the sytem is almost totally sealed and recirculated
Coolant should be tested to see if it has been diluted with too much water and brought back up to spec with concentrate or flushed if it has.
Having said that... as you are the new owner I would dump the lot and replenish with a nice, lovely new batch.
Then you know 100% it is all tickety boo.
Not a bad idea to do a decent flush of the brakes as well and get any water droplets out of the calipers

Flush flush flush.
especially given the previous owner didn't even know what was in it.
sorta tells me it's probably been in there a long time and over due any ways.
and use distilled water if you buy a concentrate.
demineralized water can be a chemical only process to counteract minerals.
spoil your car and fit a new thermostat, summers around the corner.
