View Full Version : Did I fix it?

Not sure if this is in the right place but I'll go for it anyway.

Driving along and all of a sudden it feels like the front left wheel starts to be a drive wheel, the steering wheel firmly jolts to the left. As soon as I let go of the accelerator it pulls itself back to normal.

I stopped and had a bit of a look around the front of the car. Noticed that the free wheeling hub wasn't completely on the Auto section maybe a third over towards lock, just on that Borderline position between the two. I reposition to the auto section and continued along only drove approximately 1 kilometre and it hasn't done it again.

Is it possible that that's the problem was?

In short... yes

It wouldn't have been 'driving' but the extra drag on one side as the LH wheel turned the 1/2 shafts and diff etc would def have been noticeable on the bitumen.

Keep an eye on the FWH, if it does keep creeping towards lock then it needs a hug.

If the 4x4 selector was in 2 wheel drive it shouldn't? There will be some resistance but it shouldn't change with acceleration?

Yes selector in 2wd.
Doesn't change with acceleration, just feels like it kicks in.

Will keep an eye on it .

Letting go accelerator might mean slowing down. That might be unlocking the partially autolocking hub. Just a thought.

Still no good.
The fwh hub is getting hot.
Going to take it off and see if there's enough grease.

Resist the urge to pack it full of grease.
Too much grease is almost as bad as none on the Auto hubs

A hub issue shouldn't affect temperature all that much, could be a bearing related problem maybe.
Was also thinking a dragging disc but not sure how that would change the hub
I guess you just need to have a good look around

Does the grease issue matter if the auto piece is out?

I took off the hub and the wheel Bearing was pretty loose. Tighten it up and went for a spin and no difference.

Still sounds like a bearing tho

When jacked up can you "feel" the bearing or hear it.
Is the disc? blue or look like its been very hot

Wheels feels ok when turning, but looks like the wheel bearing is a bit loose again

I'm guessing wheel bearings. Hopefully just the outer.
I've parked it up for now till I get some time to pull things apart and have a proper look.

All you have to do to find out that is to jack up the suspecting wheel and grab it from top and bottom and feel any play.

Yep, bearings are farked.
Inner one is just about welded on, have ground as much as possible but the shaft is all pitted.

Anyone got a stub that I can exchange for a few $$$, or its off to the wreckers.

Funny thing is that it didn't make the normal farked bearing noise until about the last 5 km. Before that it must have been the pads dipping into the disk that I could hear.

Yeah bugger. Thought it sounded a bit like a bearing. Had that happen years ago, it kind o pulled a bit wierd then ceized on the highway which was a bit scary.
You would think I'd the hub was engaging by itself it would make a pretty serious clunk or grinding noise.
Good luck with it, at least it didn't leave you stranded.

Look around. You should be able to get a better deal. Try fleabay.
No idea how you managed to have it that bad and not notice it tad earlier.
Must be the stereo system in your fourby?! ;)

Trust me, I didn't want to be changing the spindle as well.
I stopped driving it as soon as possible after it made bearing noise.

Yeah, they are tricky sometime. I'm usually pretty fine tuned for anything out of ordinary.
4Wds can be a real biatch when they break down in the middle of nowhere. :)

Am I able to use a GQ spindle on a GU.
Mine is an early series 1.
I don't think so, but had to ask.

Theres a mob on ebay selling nrw aftermarket srub axles for 185each. New oem are around double. I need to get a new rhs one as the inner wheel bearing has been spinning hard up against where the hub seal runs.

Just make sure the inner bearing hasnt been rubbing against where the hub seal runs. If it has there will be a small step there.

Well not luck with the $75 one.
I get there and the guys points outside and says "go have a look for what you need and I'll get someone to take it off.

There got 2 GUs, one has no front diff and the other is missing everything from the left hand side. This after he tell me, "yeah, we're got one".
GET WRECKED 4X4 can get f@#$%d

Picked one up for $120. Looks pretty good no seal makes. Along with a bearing kit and a tub of grease from CBC bearings. I didn't know that they sold them as kits. I rang them and started to give them bearing part numbers and the guy there stopped me and asked if it was for a car and which make and model. Full kit with seals $154 and that was the cheapest that I found.

Cleaned up a bit and knocked all the bearing cups in. All ready to refit tomorrow.

Job done. All cleaned and packed up.

Worked out to $297.
Spindle, bearing kit, gasket glue and a tub of grease. Happy with that..

Still got me f@#$ed why there was no bearing noise earlier. Oh well. It's done now.

And to answer my original question.
Yes, I did....

Don't really know what they like, just pissed me off when I got there.
Even my son said "he wasn't very helpful"
