Gedday all,

Have a 2008 3litre CRD patrol and to get a decent LHK figure, have put in EGR plate with 8mm hole, and a Mann-Hemmel catch can. Around town, the catch can showed no oil in outlet pipe. These reduced my diesel consumption around town from 13 LHK to 11.2 LHK. Great, so I then had a 2 1/2 inch exhaust fitted, drove to/from work for a week, then did a 3+ hour trip to Warwick QLD towing a car on a trailer.

Once again, towing fuel consumption came down from 18 LHK to 15.5 / 16 LHK sitting on 95 kmh.. But, about two hours into the trip, I stopped at Aratula for a 20 minute break, then continued. For those who are not S.E. Qld'ers, you then do half hour of undulating highway, then you hit the range to climb up to Cunninghams' Gap.

During this half hour flat terrain driving, all sorts of things started to happen.

- Fuel economy increased
- My ScanGauge showed Boost all over the place from 10 to 20 psi (I don't know how accurate it is)
- a two tone whistle started up in engine bay and I could play a tune with the accelerator pedal.

When I got to the top of the range, I pulled over, and substantial oil had collected in the drain tube of catch can. My drain tube is 1/2 inch clear tube with a $4 tap from Bunnings on it, have zip tied tube down past chassis. Proceeded to Warwick and heard only small air noises coming from under the bonnet. Rang RACQ, they put me onto TFS Automotive in Warwick. Great people, stopped what they were doing and attached dinky dy $6000 computer and found nothing wrong. they washed out Mann-Hemmel catch can filter. Rest of trip to Stanthorpe and then back home to Brisbane I had no more problems except once or twice Boost flew right up to 18 psi fo a short burst.

Back to the grind, to and from work for a week and still no more problems. Took Patrol back to exhaust place, they tightened up an exhaust bracket that was a bit loose, but found no other problems (eg warped manifold).

So, where do I go from here? Do I have a future turbo problem? Has the warped exhaust manifold straightened itself?

I'm scratching my head. Has anyone else had these problems?

I doubt its manifold as it only whistles when cold. Do you have a Dawes valve? Putting the bigger pipe and egr blank can cause the turbo to overboost. It did in mine. I think its time for manual boost control.

As I said before it could be a split egr pipe but that'll only whistle cold.
I think its time to NADS your Patrol to control the boost which will control your egts.
If your IC is oily chances are its leaking they all do , just for the record

Boost pressure -
10 to 20 PSIG (gauge) is normal for a CRD.
I left my Scangauge in PSIA (Absolute) IE it would read from low teens to low 30's.
The reason for that is the pressure indication is then not affected by altitude or air density so it is easier to see if there is something amiss.
Your 18 PSI fluctuation can be anything, maybe even headwind changes, as the factory setup is very sensitive and will boost early and fast.

Whistle proportional to throttle -
Can be lots of things, Exhaust manifold, EGR, Boost pressure to name a few.
Do you have one of the Scan gauge readouts set to engine temp?
Might help to see if the whistle comes and goes at high or low engine temps.

Seeing the mods are recent it may take a while to get a feel for what is normal on the Scangauge.
From your descriptions and the performance so far the engine is definitely not overboosting.
The oil in the catch can drain may have been due to heavier than normal breathing due to the tow up Cunnighams
Keep an eye on your oil consumption/dipstick levels but again not overly alarming unless it jumps significantly

I was just reading through the op and i was thinking for him to check the egr pipe. They are prone to splitting on the crd motors. Surprisingly cheap to buy too...
