Gedday all,

I'm from Brisbane, and have had various 4WD's since I was 16 yrs. old. Ranging from a Series 1 LandRover to several Falcon engined Jeeps through to V6 Jackaroos and Ford Courier SpaceCab tray-backs. Where I did my Fitting & Turning apprenticeship, Ford request us to develop the XW (?) Falcon 4WD ute with all Dana running gear. Very exciting times for me as a young fella at the time.

I now have a 2008 3litre CRD patrol and to get a decent LHK figure, have put in EGR plate with 8mm hole, and a Mann-Hemmel catch can. Around town, the catch can showed no oil in outlet pipe. These reduced my diesel consumption around town from 13 LHK to 11.2 LHK. Great, so I then had a 2 1/2 inch exhaust fitted, drove to/from work for a week, then did a 3+ hour trip to Warwick QLD towing a car on a trailer.

Once again, towing fuel consumption came down from 18 LHK to 15.5 / 16 LHK sitting on 95 kmh.. But, about two hours into the trip, I stopped at Aratula for a 20 minute break, then continued. For those who are not S.E. Qld'ers, you then do half hour of undulating highway, then you hit the range to climb up to Cunninghams' Gap.

During this half hour flat terrain driving, all sorts of things started to happen.

- Fuel economy increased
- My ScanGauge showed Boost all over the place from 10 to 20 psi (I don't know how accurate it is)
- a two tone whistle started up in engine bay and I could play a tune with the accelerator pedal.

When I got to the top of the range, I pulled over, and substantial oil had collected in the drain tube of catch can. My drain tube is 1/2 inch clear tube with a $4 tap from Bunnings on it, have zip tied tube down past chassis. Proceeded to Warwick and heard only small air noises coming from under the bonnet. Rang RACQ, they put me onto TFS Automotive in Warwick. Great people, stopped what they were doing and attached dinky dy $6000 computer and found nothing wrong. they washed out Mann-Hemmel catch can filter. Rest of trip to Stanthorpe and then back home to Brisbane I had no more problems except once or twice Boost flew right up to 18 psi fo a short burst.

Back to the grind, to and from work for a week and still no more problems. Took Patrol back to exhaust place, they tightened up an exhaust bracket that was a bit loose, but found no other problems (eg warped manifold).

So, where do I go from here? Do I have a future turbo problem? Has the warped exhaust manifold straightened itself?

I'm scratching my head. Has anyone else had these problems?

Gday Muzzagod and welcome.
What you are describing sounds like boost fluctuating as a result of your bigger exhaust - not uncommon.
There are a lot who block the EGR, then fit a bigger exhaust start to have issues with the boost.
Sounds like you need to consider fitting a manual boost controller with a dawes valve.
Search is your friend on the forum.
On the CRD motor the overboost issue is not as bad, but i heard several people have the issue when they go to the bigger exhaust system

Hi mate and welcome , if your IC is oily chances are its leaking, you may also have a split egr pipe.
I would read up on NADS ,google Chaz Yellowfoot, might want to fit a boost and EGT gauge in a
pillar pod or similar too. In the mean time enjoy
