Hey guys,

Please have a look see of below video. By that I meant please hear it.
I recorded it back in July.
This girl has been screeching every single night like this for couple of years.
Mostly during the colder six months of the year. So, I reckon she's there only during the cold season.
I have a a feeling she's a migratory bird. From distance what I saw, she was the size of a
Australian Eastern Magpie, but with narrower, more hawk like wings.
I know the reason for her screech.
It's basically to keep the possum boy that's been challenging her and possibly her babies
in the nest. So she screams all night to keep her family safe.
I haven't heard her since the dawn of the spring.
Dunno whether she comes back, but have a strong feeling, if she's still alive and well, she will come back to claim
her night tree top during colder months. So, I reckon next Autumn she will be back.

For all the birders out there, please help me to identify this girl.

I'm in Melbourne east of course. But, this noisy nocturnal bird is a kinda mystery to me.
No idea whether she's a native or a migratory. I'm only guessing.
Regardless of her screeching all night, I missed her loud cry at night.

Please help me to identify this strange girl.

Bats mate. 100% we had the same noise when staying at a friends plade on the gold coast. It was doing my head in. so i went out with my head lamp and found a bat chasing a possum through the trees making this exact noise.

Yeah, he/she was fighting with a possum. But, this was going on every friggin night from Autumn to Winter.
I'm in eastern subruban Melbourne. Not that common around here to hear these persistent nocturnal bird/bat screeching.

But, below video by another indicates you are correct, even thought my romantic birder mind wanted it to be a nest protecting bird mother. :D

I missed the bastard atm, 'cos past couple of months there's no screeching at night. :D

The reason I thought it was a nocturnal bird, not a bat 'cos I couldn't see any fruits in the gum tree, but there must have been some.

From what I've heard from guys so far, it's a fruit bat, probably fighting with a possum for fruits or room in the tree.

Nocturnal persistent screeching birds like that are rare in suburban Melbourne, I reckon.
I reckon the guys are right. It's a fruit bat, perhaps a bit more ambitious one than the average one. :D

I live in mill park and we get big bats here. Effing scary mofos when they fly from the tree. While there are quiet here i have heard them when my cat decides its a good idea to have a crack at one.

They are pretty good at biting back, and can give the cat, bat rabies. Make sure the night crawler don't get a chance to approach them. :)

BTW, you live in my home town, which is not too far from Milllebanon & Millmacedonia. :D
I haven't come across bats there in my good old days, but I was sleeping well most of the nights back then. :D ;)
I'm in Eastern Boganville now.

Yeah, it's almost unanimous now. My romantic thoughts were crushed instantaneously. :)
Also, I don't think I'm that good a birder anymore. :D
It looks like I suck a fair bit at it atm. :D
Back to drawing board to polish up my birding eyes and ears. :)

Yeah my cat is 17. Plus he stays inside at nights. Except for when he's busting for a piss ill let him out for a while. We only get bats because the next door neighbor has a fig tree in their front yard and the bats go gang busters on it.

Sorry to burst your bubble :)

My previous property had banana trees, possums, fruit bats and that's the noise I use to hear.

Hey Rodney,
The romantic bubble was going on for near two years, thinking I was watching a courageous bird mother protecting her family(see my original post) :D
It was crushed here in matter of minutes. :)
That's real damage. :) I need to drink this stuff to recover, now. :D

Mine has only turned 10 this year. You've done pretty well with your one. Keep it that way. He may go all the way to be 30. :)
Cheers

LOL....Speaking of real damage, my daughter was so petrified of the possums mating call (grunt) I don't think she will ever go outside at night without the lights being on.

Sorry Mud, it turned out to be a hideous, rabies carrying bat. No porn, no birds. :D
I've wasted nearly two years of my night time listening to a hideous bat, should've spent that time on porn for sure. :D
If the link was about ones with extra large boobs, do PM it to me....I was breast fed as a kid. :animierte-smilies-t

He.....he......they are so many of those suckers around here at night & right now is their romping time. It's so common, I'm deaf to that grunt now. More like the nightime whinging of my X. :D

Hmmm......have a vague memory of doing something along those lines at a bucks night out, long time ago. :D ;)
It's not that bad, once you're pissed up to the nose. I'm guessing, that's why we call it pissed, not drunk. ;)

Yeah they're noisy feckers too. Dunno whats worse, their grunt or them making a racket running across the roof. Bloody koalas are worse. cute and cudly during the day. But they need to be gagged at night though. I spent five nights camping on the Murray in easter. They were five sleepless nights. Even with a belly full of booze each night...

It got to the stage at my previous property that the possums were happy to receive apples, pears and bananas from me by hand. I guess they didn't need to run across my roof. To be honest I would rather possums then bats.

I don't think I've heard Koalas at night.....Are you sure it wasn't Winnie....LOL

Yeah, got nothing against possums. They only grunt every other night here during the spring time when the male testosterone is high(Don't we as well?! :) )
Bats give me shivers. Nature obviously invented them for a reason, but I'm happy to not to have them near me.
BTW, they are happy to eat the fruits out of your hand, then also happy to leave steaming turd pellets right in front of your door as well. :D
I quit feeding magpies for the same reason. :)

Yeah, I can see the funny side of it. Never camped in koala country. Closest place to Melbourne that I thought there were koalas was the Brisbane Ranges national park. I spent time there, but couldn't see a single one of the cuddly fur balls.

Magpies.. well that's a different story. I like to let my chickens out during the day in the believe/hope that makes a happier chicken that produces a better quality egg.

Now I really like my eggs, with of course bacon. So when I see my local magpie dive-bombing and stressing out my chickens this upsets me.

Magpies here dive bomb on people. They are sometime aggressive critters during the mating season. One took a kid's eye out couple of years ago. But, most of the time time they scratch the head and fly away. Only an issue if you are bald. :D

Mate camping on the murray we had a family of them in the tree right next to our camp for five days. Must have been the mum and dad and the little baby one. Was good during the day for the kids but at night i wish i had a gun. Lol. They are everywhere up on the murray. Not to mention the roo's. We came across maybe a 100 in one group. I had never seen anything like it.
We have a family of magpies at our place thats been there longer than we have.11years. The previous owner used to feed them so we do now, and they make a beautiful sound by the front porch when they want some fresh meat to eat. We can go out there and they wont swoop us at all. They will eat out of our hand. If anyone else walks buy, its game on.

Never seen any Maggies up the Murray plenty of cockies and galahs and currajongs, we hand fed some Kookaburras one year.
When the the peace is disturbed by the cockies just look up and you'll see a mighty wedge tail circling above.
Also hate the sound Koalas make [bull] when mating season is on, similar the roar of a buck deer,
you would swear someone is getting murdered. lol
