View Full Version : My new mate Seamus.

Hey guys, thought i would start a thread for me mate Seamus ( a 2008 GU) who I recently drove down from QLD from 2trolfam.

Probably going to start off slow as I have a bit to put on and don't know exactly where to start lol. And I will probably need a hand as he is my first GU.

Though first thing I was thinking to help the Mrs with here already "questionable" reversing abilities, I was thinking a reverse camera :) keep her happy before I put the good stuff on ;) now the plan was to either mount to the roof racks, or make a work light off the spare tyre mounted attach to that, (Would love some help deciding on that one).
Also would be what kind of camera and display for it... Any1 have an idea of price of one that replaces the rear view mirror? Or a way to have it connect to a tablet and activate in reverse?? (Was just an idea that I might be able to do that at the same time :))

I will post some pics when I get some kind of progress happening.

Thx all in advance.

If you have the STD head unit [radio] is it reverse camera capatible?
Most hear have swapped out the OE head unit for a bluetooth, GPS, reverse camera ready job.
Ive just fitted a rear camera and TBH I dont use it just a PITA, not to say I wont use it.
There is a heap of threads on this subject Ill try and find it for you.
I have a brand new reverse mirror one here if you want to try first.
Ill never use it plus heaps of spare cameras for you to mix and match

Seamus has a basic Kenwood Bluetooth/CD head unit which I doubt is compatible for a reverse camera :(

Reverse mirror ones I've seen mixed reviews on after market ones and the one Brad put in Amelia when he built her canopy was a piece of c$#€

More light back there would be helpful and was always a one day thing - some the boys here have some terrific setups for rear light bars

Nice buy mate. I have a reverse camera that I fitted. It has a clip over teplacement mirror and the vid screen is embedded into about half of it. Works a treat.

My daily is a new Hyundai Santafe and it has a massive screen for the reverse camera, always though the one in the GAu was great but after driving the Hyundai for a while it's pitiful by comparison. On its own though it's a bloody winner mate. Works a treat.

Reverse cameras are one of those things that you cant do without, once you've had one. Put the camera up under barn door handle. Which is where mine used to be. But with the jerry holders they block it. So, mine will be going on the roof rack. I've got a pioneer double din head unit. Nice clean buy, BTW.

Thx. Ye that would actually be really awesome. Ye I did t really want to fork out the money for a whole new head unit lol.

And I think the replacement for the rear view will keep the Mrs happy lol.

Means I might need to buy a welder to make the work light frame ;)

Ok, now next thing is installing gauges... I have egt, boost gauge, and a battery volt reader. The exhaust already has bugs on it. With the boost point, there is a pipe from the pressure section of the system, can any one just quickly confirm if this is a correct location for the reading to be taken on the 3l rd? Looks Legit to me... Lol

Show us a photo mate.

The easiest way is to get one of these adapters. They sit under the MAP sensor (not MAF), on the intercooler.

Excellent. Looks like somebody has already put a probe in. Nice spot just after the turbo as well , perfect. So where does that boost hose go? Do you have a dawes/needle setup ?

62529
Made it to here,
62530
Had to cut a little off the end as it had some extra length. Lol
62531
Managed to get it all in and looking nice.

Just left us wiring it all up. Only small hickup I found was the bung in the exhaust is different size to the sensor but. I'll drop by somewhere and see if I can get something for that tomorrow arvo. :)

Ok... New update.. got the price to make the probe fit :)62557

Other thing... As I didn't drive it to work today he sat in the driveway all day. So he Sat for about 24 hrs, came home to a bloody big puddle of coolant on the ground??????? Literally see it dripping... Looking under I can't see too much from the source, but does run a lot.. Main spots noticeable just under and behind the air con unit.... But the driveway does have quite a bit of a lean backwards.

Also while looking for the leak found a random hose to nowhere....?? Not the reason for coolant, but is it Normal???
62559

Off to search the forum for any answers!!!!

Btw, it's amazing how fast happiness can turn to fear 😨

Hodge
5th November 2015, 06:18 PM
That hose will be the air con drain hose ?? I'm guessing.

Source of the leak could be anywhere mate. Did you maybe knock a hose clamp or something while tinkering under the hood last few days ??

I hope it isn't the dreaded front timing cover coolant leak super common to the 3L variety. It's a rather expensive fix.

Ok... So I guess I have a strange leak as well. No coolant leak at all since that day... I guess if it ain't broke, don't fix it??

Also have the gauges all finished and wired. Took my time and did it with minimum stress.
Ran all wired, probes, pressure hose under wheel to the receiver. Pulled the small panel under steering wheel off (1 screw and 4 bolts) and off she pops. Velcro and some hot glue to stick the receiver on, when off was easily able to access dimming switch(plug) and wired gauges onto it. Nice and easy :) quick piggyback fuse circuit for power and all sweet. Wire conduit for keeping it all need and pack up. Except for the one panel I didn't have to pull dash apart. All happy on that note.

Now to decide on the next little project :)

Give u a heart attack.... I think I almost cried when I saw it.
Ye I'll test it when I get around to work out the wire loom.
Think winch next would be best as I have to pull bull bar off. With the uhf antenna attached to it makes for complications. (Had the same issue with my last gq lol.)
Do u know if the wire that came with the winch is big enough? I recall having a lot bigger on my last one. But I think I went a bit overkill on my battery and winch wiring.

It will be fine to do that. First off just try to pull it out, don't actually snatch it. If it's really stuck give it a bit of a tug but if that doesn't work then try something else.

Personally I wouldn't be doing this. Imagine if it lets go when under full tension it would be just like a snatched towball would be. A deadly missile.

Remove the entire towbar, sit it upright with the tongue upwards and get some either hydrochloric acid, or phosphoric acid and pour it down inbetween the tongue and housing. Let it soak over night and try hitting with a sledgy or something. The acid will oxidise the rust. If you don't have those acids, you can use Coke, it also has phosphoric acid in it. Lol. And we drink this stuff. Albeit diluted...
I have both acids here if you need some. I live in Mill Park so...

Yeah. That was y I wasn't going to do that one. Just sounded good at the time ;) I was trying to avoid removing tow bar, but I probably should to give it a full clean up as it's got a little surface rust showing. That initial laziness kicking in. But It will defiantly keep me busy for a bit lol. I'll probably pull off and try with a better angle and a sledgie and some coke to start with, Hodge's seemed to blow at that. Don't be hard on yourself. I haven't had any real issues. Only confusing point was the random coolant day lol. This was just my build thread. There wasn't really any rust In the shaft. Mostly just some brownish gunk built up. Nothing a can of coke and a hammer can't fix ;)

Probably a stupid question, but.

I don't know if this link will work,
If I does what's the chances of these tanks from a gq, fitting under a GU??
Sure there can't be too much difference considering I've seen GU tanks put under a gq...
But just wondering...

I dont believe the gq tank will fit in a gu. The floor pan is shaped different.

Made up a little bracket with some padding to minimise vibration

Fit it in.

Hook it all up, and turn her on. :)

Then a nice little error v 1.03 error popping up???

Anyone seen this before?? Can't find any references for it. . Got me stuffed. Double checked connections and plugs and all is sweet...
Was the radio doing this before? I think that code has something to do with vhf frequencies.

Aah Sry forgot to post that we worked it out. It was a slight connector issue to the unit. All working perfectly now.

Righto. Had some time and invested in seams today.

Start with led bar on his hat, wire loom as backwards?? And was designed to just turn light on with the button.. So I re-wired the way I know, off the high beam and switched.

Put the reverse camera on the back under the handle ledge, made my own little mount, looks nice :) just need to Finnish running the wire all the way to the front roof for the screen [emoji15].

Gave a big wash, top to bottom, and under hood.

Changed air filter, relatively bad but just wanted fresh or my trip to and from qld.

Was about to change oil when I realised it's got like a 23mm sump plug on it.... Like wtf I don't have anything that big [emoji23] so looks like I'm going to need a new socket set that goes upto 30mm for christmas... Just to be safe [emoji6]

Unfortunately my phone died this morning, so I've had to resort to the old iPhone and tapatalk on it doesn't want to let me post pics so I'll have to put them up when I sit down on the computer. But they will be coming :)
