View Full Version : Thinking of making a rear tube bar for the GU....

So I've been googling for images for ideas. Found a few but i have no idea on what wall thickness and probably tube diameter i should use. I know just saving and buying a made bar from who ever is easier, but to be honest, theres nothing that really takes my fancy and would kinda like to make something.
Plus id like to not weld bends on for the corners, but to use a bender. So i guess i need a bender. What size bender would be required? As in like 12ton, or 20ton?
I also want to make a spare wheel carrier. So it needs to have the strength to carry a 35.
This aint sometihng i will be doing straight away, but i just need to gather info and thoughts from others and research, research, resesrch....
Another thing too. I will need to do a 1/4 gaurd chop too. I suppose when it comes time, this should be done first....

Cheerz.

Sounds good. I'll take with a jerry can holder too please.

So pipe bender..
The better quality the dies the better the bend will be...
12T minimum.. 20T is overkill..
16t is what I have..
Go air assist for the win..

Tube you want regular pipe.
Some call it water pipe, some call it medium wall.. the wall thickness changes with the diameter..
And remeber pipe works on bore size..
So 32nb is around 38od, 40nb is around 50 etc etc..
I'll be using 40nb for my rear bar and side steps.. I'm one for not going lightly..

Use these for your swing away, they come in round and Square and two lengths as well

Personally I do one like the after market FJ cruiser has
looks like the Stealth aircraft, very angular but worth the effort imo

Thanks. I need to do the 1/4 guard chop first I think before I start to make any measurements etc etc. So I have to get my head around this first. So anyone done a 1/4 guard chop on a GU? Lol.

Never seen a GU with a quarter chop

Yeah most dont need it for the pre built steel bars, but from the pics I have seen on custom bars they have chopped the 1/4's.

Even with a tube bar you wont need to chop the quarters

Healy did a rear quarter chop on that white POS he had and I reckon it looked crap.
Have you got some pics of them that look good on a GU, Mark?

Yeah il put up some pics later. When i get time i will remove the bumper and have a better look. I think the chop was done on the bar i saw as it look like it kinda went under when the guard was.

Check out 04OFF's bar. He did a quarter chop. Having seen it in real life a few times, I think it looks great.

It's a prick of a job to get decent 90deg bend out of them press benders. Can be done but a pain. Have a look at jd2 benders. They are great. Not cheap but can be on sold once your project is finished.

Interested to see how this goes as this is something I have been thinking about doing.

This is one job that I like. I think the chop might not be necessary for this one but it was done so the lower section is not hanging down past the bumper....

Yeah! I know. I would prefer to use flat plate rather than the checker plate though. Somethings telling me I might be way out of my league with something like this. No harm in trying though..... I used to have the CAT mudflaps on my old MK, I so wanna put them back on too.

Yeah I saw a few pics of his. Very nice. Do you know if he made it himself? I do want to have a spare wheel swing away on mine though. I like the tail lights he's used too. Your not wrong on those benders. Gawd! I might be cutting corners and welding elbows onto straight pipe. Lol.

Made plenty if you need a hand, just around the corner so to speak.
you can get long radius elbows for a better look

04OFF made it with the help of a former member after some issues with some local fab shops. Tbh that's about the extent of my knowledge. It does look nice.

You are a bit snookered material wise, be it pipe or RHS,
How about some laser cut profiles that make it your own.
Nothing worse than pulling up next to a Patrol that looks
exactely the same, mod wise that is, I hate it with a passion
I hated it when I was riding bikes and I still hate it now

Why am i snookered? I do like the pipe look of the bar. One day id even like to do a front bar, but the xrox ones are cheap enough to not worry about making one.

40nb is what you want at least. It can take a fair hit, and 12mm plate with incorporated recovery point for the chassis mount

Use tube if you want it stronger not pipe.

Lol. Theres a difference? Goes to show how much i know.

Having said that, would it be ok to weld on bends? Or use a bender?

Yes there is. Tube is od. Pipe is id. Thickness with tube will be referred to as "schedule".

Decent schedule tube cant be bent on a small bender though.

Ok so welding is fine. I can weld but i wont be welding i think. I will tack it all together when time comes to do this, but i will get my mate who welds for a living to do it for a neater finish.

I used 40nb for the top rail of winch bar.. with 12mm side plates with the recovery points..
I may or may not have nosed a stobie pole when chucking a u turn after first fitting it..
The bar didn't Budge lol

Good tube is ideal, 40nb 3.2mm wall is cheap and can be bent in a small bender, just keep the seam on the inside of the bend where possible

Yep and plenty strong. I just like to throw spanners around lol.

Do something different and make it out of 6mm wall 6061 ally tube

Nows theres an idea. Only thing is ally tube would look crap on a white patrol i reckon. Unless i paint it. Steel is fine for me.

I'd take a guess that there's not much change from $200 for a length of 50mm alloy tube..
