I'm trying to access the centre dash panel containing the sub-tank switch and cigarette lighter etc. In order to get that out, I need to remove the centre console around the gear levers. In order to remove that, I need to remove the transfer case lever knob.

How does this come off? Tried unscrewing but it does not want to budge. It appears to be mounted in soft rubber.

Anyone know? Or is there some other way to remove the centre console without damaging the transfer lever skirt?

It is on a GU 3L diesel wagon.

I have used a filter tool with a soft band to unscrew gear levers - like this

I just got my Mrs to unscrew it. She has a very strong right hand ;)

Thank you all. And it really does unscrew!!
I got it off OK, but shit it was tight. Had to use tools with a leather protector on the knob. No damage.
I really appreciate the help from you experienced players on this site.

While your there take the opportunity to move the sub tank switch from this stupid spot. Nissan decided that the power aerial switch was more important so put that on the gear box surround. I swapped these 2 switches and have never looked back. This is where the sub tank switch should be. Note you will have to extend all the wires as the factory look will not be long enough but very easy to do.

Yep, agree totally MudRunnerTD. That's one of the things I am doing while I have the dash and console in pieces.

While you have the dash apart I highly recommend this mod too. I will be doing t next time I pull mine it for sure.

Thanks again MudRunnerTD, but I'll pass on that one for now. That is not on my priority list at this stage.
And it's no big deal accessing those parts of the dash - once you know how.
