Might be a stupid question but when wiring volt gauges do you connect it straight to the battery?

I am going to dothatb but i was going to run a normally open relay to the ignition wire which would switch on when the engine was running. Then I was going to connect the battery vua a fuse to the battery and use the relay to switch earth to the voltmeter. The idea was to have two meters, one for each battery that would switch off when the motor was turned off.

Only come off the battery if you want the gauge to be "always on"... otherwise... fuse box ACC bus is a good alternative of several.
