View Full Version : Possible key barrel issue

I was told by a sparky few years back that the GQ key barrel can go dodgy(from wear and tear). I wondered whether I had that issue in mine when the fuel lock-off solenoids(both LPG and Petrol) failed to energize. I went down the dash to check the two fuses and the connections, which looked ok. (One of the 10A fuses that was wired before the fuel selector blew up couple of months ago, due to a reason I couldn't locate.) But, then when I was playing with the wires that goes to the key barrel, it started working again. That could've been a co-incidence, or I might have hit the jackpot there. But, I didn't bother to look into it any further as I got busy with other issues with the car.
Any thoughts guys?
ATM, no dramas. All is going fine, but I have a feeling what can go wrong, what had gone wrong, will go wrong. I tried to fault it again and again by playing with the wires behind the key barrel, but things were ok.

May be I should leave it alone, until I experience another hiccup in the same area?

Not 100% sure sure that GQ keys are coded,
if worn you'd need to jiggle it to be able to turn it
Can you see the chip in the black part of key??

Hi mate,
Nope, this is the old school GQ key and key barrel, no chips in the key.
I'm guessing, it's probably a bit of corrosion inside the key barrel contacts?
Or the dual fuel switch wiring under the dash might be bit dodgy.
The blowing of the fuse indicated something, but I didn't have the time to investigate all the possibilities.
I renewed few earths, cleaned a few and renewed few LPG wiring to an from the tanks, which were done pretty bad
by the bloke who ever did the wiring before.
May be I should leave it alone.
Can't fix all the electrical dramas of an old rig like mine, can I?
It's a 1990 RB30(carby).
