Try a swap over with a nearby engine builder. If that's possible, lot less trouble I reckon.

Not a big fan of the rattle gun specials I'd probably think $4K may
be the price maybe even more depending what you want done.

11,000. Fark. That's bs.. that's the cost of a new car....
I'd be asking for a full run down of what he's done. List it. Price.. and then show you what he's done..

Yeah, I think for 11K he can locate a decent TD42. He's about get his wallet & it's contents ripped out through his left nut.

Better off buying/exchanging a recondition engine from a reputable engine rebuilder, or
I would rebuild myself with a kit like this,

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Diesel-Engine-Rebuild-Kit-suit-Nissan-Patrol-GU-Y61-RD28TI-2-8Ltr-Turbo-Motor-/111235681786?hash=item19e629cdfa

or use a rebuilder like this,

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NISSAN-PATROL-RD28T-2-8LT-DIESEL-ENGINE-FULLY-RECONDITIONED-/262052164123?hash=item3d0386b21b

or this

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/RD28-T-Fully-reconditioned-diesel-engine-/321890785793?hash=item4af22f9a01

Nothing's as certain as doing it yourself, but that only if you got time and resources to do that.

It can add up quick if your not careful,
Just getting pump and injectors sorted will be ~$2-3k
~1k for machining the block
~up to 1k to get the head sorted
1-2k for the basic rebuild kit.

That's 7k without any labour! Or getting the radiator serviced, etc

Even if you buy a complete engine the costs will add up quicker than you think, not saying it's not the best option though. By the time you get the radiator done, replace all the coolant hoses, new engine mounts a full set of filters and coolant/oil, you will be up to an extra 2k

Then of course you might as well throw a new clutch in it while your going.....have to draw a line somewhere though!

If you got time in your hands, you should be able to get away with lot less than that.
Things do get expensive when you are on the clock.
I like to think the average backyard hobby mechanic can do most of the stuff except things like injector pumps, which may need specialized tools to calibrate(don't take my word, I've never done a one).
Sounds pretty expensive to cost 3K to get the pump and injectors sorted.
1K for machining the block sounds pretty expensive as well.
Reconditioned head can cost close to 1K. Fleabay has lot cheaper deals though.

What about low km used engines with warranty?
They show up with wreckers from time to time.
