View Full Version : Dilemma. Turbo or gu diffs

So wifie have given the ok to upgrade the diffs to gu diffs.. yay.
Found a nice set close by from a 2.8 so running (to the best of our knowledge) 4.6 diffs.
Got 164 thou on them. Only bits missing are the front rotors..
But. Should I get it turbo'd? I've been told I'd loose my nuts but I think it could be worth the risk lol.
Cost is about both the same. Diffs will need rims and tyres.
Turbo will need exhaust and gauges, intercooler etc.
So I'm still not sure about the turbo. It's original driveline and clutch. 520 thou on the old girl now, a bit worried about it to be honest.
Diffs will off set the 33's and a bit so will make towing the new van nice, better brakes, stronger diffs and gives the option of 35's if I want 😆
What are people's thoughts??

well, is it going to be used for towing
or
playing
if towing, you will know what the best option will be, as your driving it
if its keeping up with traffic, and semi's are not overtaking you in 2nd gear..................
its the old question of having 2 sets of tyres
one for on road use
one for playing off road
what to do............................
me.....? I'd go turbo & intercooler, see how it tows then
if it needs better gearing, then try that

Aren't 2.8 diffs smaller? Like physical size smaller then a td4.2/the 4.5/zd30 diffs

You'll need these for your diffs,
cant source a TD at the wreckers to buy bits off

No same size. The rear has a smaller pinion flange but that is easily swapped.

Gu diffs are also wider so you may need to look at increase flare width. You will also require a drag link with 2 different ends in it as the gq ones are slightly different.
Apart from the brake upgrade do you do anything that would really require the extra strength/weight of gu diffs?
If its mainly a tourer then it should be an easy choice.

Unless you're breaking your GQ diffs go the turbo best mod I've made to my truck.
I turbocharged mine at 500k should have done it as soon as I bought it, pleasure to drive now

Doubt I'll ever break a gq cv. And the extra track is a bonus.
Main reason for looking at them is there only 164k old, and will be solid brake upgrade. As well as off set the 33's so I'll gain a bit more due to going to a 4.6 and bypassing 4.3's
As before. Clutch is my worry with turbo. As well as other things like temps, turbo quality etc. Only have around $1500, not $5000

I dont think the GU diffs will advantageous for you, you could acheive the same result with wheels spacers [I know].
I not sure how slugish a 4.2 is without a turbo but ppl Like Lift lid and Berrimah diesel fitted a turbo with 500K on
the clock, Who knows you might get better fuel figures.

Seeings you’re asking I’d assume that you don’t really need either. If I were in your shoes I’d put the money away towards the big trip.

Turbo in a Blink mate. the gain you will get from the turbo will more than outweigh the gain from the 4.6s.
You could just buy the centres and fit the 4.6w but i reckon they are a bit tall for 33s to be honest and you'd be pushing your NA4.2 into a higher rev range at cruising speed.
The turbo will just unleash the thing mate. Not like a petrol at all. a turbo on a TD42 is just like opening a window and letting fresh air in. all of a sudden everything is a little easier. You will Never regret it.

Definately turbo mate. Did it to my NA TD42 and will never look back. Was a gutless lump of dead weight until I bolted a turbo onto it.

Can't believe you're even considering the GU diffs Kallen? If you want better brakes then do the twin piston caliper upgrade for a fraction of the cost.
4.6 will be too high for 33s anyway.
Turbo for sure.

Isn't it a shame how there's hundreds of us here collaborating about our trucks and projects and successes and failures with such farking awesome trucks - but every single one of us can have our keys taken from us by the misses in the passenger seat - she has more control over our trucks than us lol!!!
