I’ve always used Ryco filters.
Today I looked through Ebay at prices as I’m down to my last pair of Z503 oil filters.
$27.50 each ........ but then I spied a Ryco 4wd filter kit for TD42’s $69.50 for 2 Oil filters, 1 fuel filter & an air filter. “Bewdy!” I thought, that’s a more reasonable price, I’ll get a couple.
Ah but ...... Kit RSK13 has 2 x Z503 (oil) 1 x Z332 (fuel) & 1 x A444 (Air)
Kit RSK14 has 1 x Z503 (oil) 1x Z416 (oil) 1 x Z332 (fuel) & 1 x A1412 (Air)
My car needs a Kit RSK13.5! 2 x Z503 (oil) 1x Z332 (fuel) & 1 x A1412 (Air)
So I phone Ryco to see if they can supply a kit to suit my car. The ‘Customer service’ lady tells me that TD42’s only went up to 2005 & that their kit covers all those models. I told her I thought this possibly incorrect, but nevertheless asked nicely if they might be able to supply a kit to suit my car. “Computer says no” was the effective response. “You’ll have to buy the filters individually”.
Not happy.
Does anyone else with TD42’s that are not 2006 take the same combo of filters as me or are the last of the breed different to all the others?
Any recommendations for good quality filters which are cheaper than Ryco. I’m happy to buy half a dozen of each if quality & price is right.

Donaldson. They do a kit with what you need. Not sure how much they are retail though.

Thanks I might give them a go just ‘cos I’m cheesed off with Ryco. However at $105 that’s probably as much as buying individual Ryco filters.

You don't like genuine filters Cuppa ? I walked into Nissan and walked out with all filters and a sump washer for $104.

I just assumed they would be even more expensive.
What are the part numbers? Oil, Air & Fuel?
Would the oil filters be 15208-43G0A ? I just found some of those for $15 each

Thanks that’s definitely good news about the oil filters. Now to look up the others.

I guess that’s understandable given their swapping & changing between models. I’m pretty confident now that that the Nissan 15208-43G0A & the Ryco Z503 are interchangeable.

For what it's worth when the guy asked me about the vin he mentioned something about some models having one small and large oil filter ?? So he wanted to make sure.

Can’t recall the reason off the top of my head, but recall reading that whilst the Z9 fits, that it’s not actually a good idea to substitute it on the Patrols. At one time I had a couple left over from my Falcon days & considered using them, but was put off after reading through forums.
Here ya go - first example which came up when I googled Z9 oil filter Nissan Patrol.

Unfortunately I no longer work at my old work...
I got 3 sets of ZD30 DI Filters Air Oil Fuel for about $100...
If you were going to bulk buy in sets it would be worth while.
Its a good filter website www.sakurafilters.com.au/automotive-and-light-commercial.html
I just asked the question will let you know.

Couldn't see anything in that link that tells me Z9 is a bad idea. I've read several posts where people have been using them for quite a while with no issues. They work well on a higher revving Ford engine with much longer oil change intervals so I'm confident they're fine for 5000 kms on a TD

This is from the first post.
The bypass valve only opens when there is 15psi differential pressure - eg diff between inlet and outlet, however this would occur at every start-up, every time you accelerate, and every time you drop down a gear to brake on the engine. So - unfiltered oil is in your engine at the very times you need it filtered.

Yes, Winnie, I read that. Makes me wonder how those Falcons get such high mileage out of their higher revving engines with 3 times greater interval between oil changes..
If that filter has a 15 PSI pressure difference for the bypass, it's because Ford specified it. Ryco make to factory specs.
Someone's opinion that oil is bypassing at every cold start and every time someone revs it..?

Can use a z115 on the rear instead of a z416 or z9. It is specced for some gq td42s.
With respect to various brand of filters rycos have the best anti drain valve. Oil light goes off quicker with ryco than sakura, genuine, fleetguard or anything else I've tried in the 12 years I've had my td42t.

Hmmm, I think you make a good point & having now understood the 15psi bit is about the difference between inlet & outlet on the filter, I realise it’s only something which would come into play if the filter became clogged.
I also read opinions that the filter media was different between the Z9’s & Z503’s....... but just opinion, no substantiated facts. You may well be right jff45, but I’ll play it safe in my ignorance by using a recommended filter & at $15 a pop they wont hurt the wallet too much.
Do both have an anti drain valve?

I researched again last night to remind myself why I decided Z9s were acceptable and found a thread on P4x4 where several confirmed they always used Z9 filters. 2 of the members I noted are long time 4.2 owners and regular contributors to technical threads. One is a mechanic who recently rebuilt a 4.2 for another member.
I was surprised to read several who had abandoned the genuine filters because of issues with oil pressure light taking too long to go out. I find lack of initial oil pressure more concerning than bypass theory.
When you read some of the stress that some members add to their 4.2 engines in the way of modified pumps, air intakes and turbos with 3 times factory boost pressure, you start to believe that an oil filter changed every 5000 kms isn't going to kill your engine.
I completely agree with you, only buy and use what you're personally comfortable with.

Donaldson are better. They revised their anti drain back valve and my oil light does not come on anymore. I know it works as the oil light comes on after a service with new empty filters on.

Do you use their air filters Matt?
I’ve bought a Nissan one, but looking at Donaldson they offer two options. A ’standard’ filter & a better one - which they claim will hold up to 5 times as much dust/crap before performance suffers (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Nissan-Patrol-Donaldson-Endurance-EAF5160-Air-Filter-/251046403109) which seems like a good idea to use for longer forays into dusty country. If you (or anyone) have used these ‘Endurance’ filters I’d be interested in whether you consider them to live up to their claims.
I’ve used their standard air filters before (in the bus) - quite solid items with a perforated metal cage around the pleated paper. Certainly seemed to do the job, but who would know if any better than any other?

It still has to come on when you turn the ignition on before the oil pump supplies pressure to the sender. The filters have to be filled first. The oil light on mine goes out 2-3 seconds after starting with ryco filters. Nothing else I've tried has been quicker.
Its ages since I used Donaldson filters. Might have to try them again.

I used the a couple of times as its the endurance filter thay comes in the kit. For the cost of them I found their to be no gain with what I do. I generally change my air filter every 10k anyway.

I have used the Donaldson kit and still have the oil and air filter on the ute.
Oil light still take similar time (seems like forever) to go out but I noticed the air filter is slightly higher than Nissan and Ryco. Only small difference (probably the rubber seals top and bottom) but it is harder to close top of air box.

Seems the Donaldson filter kits only come with a ‘standard’ air filter (P902298). I enquired at Western filters what the price of the kit was with the Endurance filter & was told the Endurance filter (EAF5160) can only be bought separately, which is born out by Donaldson’s listing here. http://www.donaldson4wd.com.au/products/
The Endurance filter media is ‘Ultra Fibre Nano Web media’ , the standard is pleated paper. Both are caged with perforated metal & pics of theem look the same. I did read somewhere that the kits now come with the Endurance, but this contradicts what their brochure linked to above says & what Western filters told me. Confusing eh?
In everyday use I can’t see the Endurance filter worth paying extra for, but it could be worthwhile for long desert trips?
