My son is looking to join the Patrol fraternity, and is looking at 2007 to 2009 common rail autos in 3.0.
What are the issues with this series??
My 2006 3.0 Direct injection manual had two MAJOR "known faults" Th clutch was crap and there was a water leak at the front of the block--both costly fixes.
Any feedback will be appreciated.

PM me if you want to keep your response out of the public view.
Thanks

For what it's worth mate , common rails are still prone to that famous front timing cover coolant leak. My 2009 CRD had it, I chose not to bother as it was a lot of $ to fix.
Other than that the CRD's are better than the Di. But I'd still apply the usual NADs, once and if he buys one. Great cars.

They are also prone to warping the exhaust manifold due to the higher exhaust temps. Even though the intercoolers are bolted onto the frame instead of the engine they still leak after a while as per Di's.

I hope you find it, Great cars but is the diesel engine worth?

I think they are strong enough. but for towing a caravan or something, get something else they just run to hot which is damaging things. eg turbo exhaust manifold. if you get one put a bigger pipe on it catchcan, chip and block the egr, new intercooler and boost controller they will blow the doors off a 4.2 and take you anywhere. but like I said towing ?????
that's my own personal experience.

Not sure we can find one at that price unless it has LOTS of miles on it--we have looked. I agree the 4.2 is MUCH better and worth a few more dollars than the 3.0. I think I will tell him to rethink his needs--he tows our large (20 ft) tinnie with an x-Trail now.

You have pm
My guy recently picked a GU with a dead 2.8 and is putting a 4.2 in it after he has finished rebuilding it in his clean room. Might be a better option for you guys esp with the towing aspect.

Cheers
