need to get it checked - fuel issues are the no 1 killer of the CRD. Ive read that those symptom are common with a failure of the Cam Position Sensor. Id be getting it checked out and the code ready by Nissan or a good mechanic with CRD experience and a tool to read codes.

Here is the way to check the relief valve. As Jack said, is there any way to get any codes reading ?
If you don't have a access to a scangauge , try going to Supercheapauto, I believe they plug in their tool and read codes for you for a small fee.
Thick black smoke may indicate a lot of unburnt fuel if I'm not wrong ?

Good point TD.
Still doesn't explain the fact you have diesel around the injectors on top of the rocker cover... (as per your other thread)

Black smoke and lack of power and ZD30 means only one thing = no air, check that VNT/VG turbo actuator raises up during engine idling and that vac hose to it is intact. Very common....
