View Full Version : eternal debate on 25 posts & newbies

just out of curiosity
are you (mods) able to stop someone automatically before 25 posts if they dont either
a) do an intro
b) pad old threads

just to stop them padding the threads, downloading the manuals and sodding off

you go to have a look at a thread that has a new post, and find comments like
"good thread"
"never thought of that"
"never seen that"

etc

maybe a word counter......... or something

Maybe in addition to the intro new members could wait for a pre determined time period to be eligible for manuals?

Say a month, or even a couple of weeks might encourage people to hang around, then again, maybe not, just a thought...

We should just remove this 25 post rule and have it only as our time period and bring that down to 7 days.

If anyone's desperate for it they can just pm me.

Thoughts?

Yep and the thing that annoys me more than people rushing for the manuals, is people complaining about it!

Yes AB. Time period I think is the way to go. There is no way you can discourage people from posting crap
buy posting "you'r a naughty boy" back. 7 days not enough I reckon a month. IMHO

Winnie

Sorry AB, I dont agree. If people are in a hurry for the manuals, then there's plenty of other places to download from. The 25 post ruling here is part of the forums culture, where, depending in how they post, they get to know us and us them. So what if a couple get through the net, they wont be allowed back...........

Oh and for those complaining about filling up the whats news with welcomes. ....... brace yourselves, I've got a couple of weeks worth banked up

Just remove the 25 post rule... we brought in the registered time safety net didn't we?

With 25 posts rule... they come, they give us the irrits for 25 posts, they clog up the unread posts option, then they go, then we give ourselves the irrits whinging.

With no 25 posts rule... they come, they download the info, they go, they don't give us the irrits, the unread posts index becomes releveant again.
I would be happy if there was a requirement to post in the Intro BoardIE 1 post

If they need more info they come back and ask.
Personally I would rather no posts and no return or only a few genuine ones from someone who genuinely wants assistance after obtaining the manuals over 25 posts of rubbish and another 25 of members complaining about the rubbish.

Bottom line...
I don't see the point of trying to restrict access to the manuals when the process is actually giving us the shits and not the downloader

4bye4
23rd September 2015, 11:34 AM
Got to agree witgh ET. the manual thing is causing more truble than its worth. If they really want to be a member they will post an intro. I do wish peeps would put their location in their intros though, especially if they want to know where they can get somthing.

I think doggy ( Tuppa ) is being a bit slack, he should sniff them out as soon as they join and ban them before making there first post of crap.

And in answer 2 the op yes we can ban them if they are just posting crap 2 get the manuals. But if we are bored we usually just delete there posts just before they reach 25 just 2 annoy them :)

If and when we are on the new server Andy I say just remove the 25 post rule and the time limit and see how we go for bandwidth

That's a great idea ET, While I'm not that tech savvy i dare say it would be possible as other websites like rapidshare cap / throttle download speeds if your not a paying member.

If it is possible I say cap the non paying members but not the paying ones :)

Speaking as a newbie.....I found this place through a Google search looking for a manual (it comes in pretty much at the top). When I saw the 25 post rule I just got the manual elsewhere, I joined but I'm certainly not going to post 25 posts of crap for the manual (been a forum admin a few times before....lol). For me it was just a minor inconvenience that caused me to hit the back button on the browser and click another link......but it did get me in here and so far I like what I see....:)

(Mentally counts 8......and thinks that wasn't crap.....was it????)

A lot of people do come here for the manuals only, but after taking time to look around as they clock up the required 25 posts they end up being members even after getting the manuals.
How many new members will we retain if they have immediate access to the manuals without looking around???????

I've gotta admit, I'm trying to find constructive ways of making my 25 posts.
I desperately want to access the manuals (I had an engine light light up on the way to work and I want to know what it is before I try driving home in the morning), but I have no intention of pissing off once I earn access either...
