Got an interesting problem and any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Just bought a 42TDi Series 3 with 120000km on the clock. Picked it up from the freight yard ( shipped down from central NSW ) with NO FUEL ( less than 5 litre in the tanks ) so found the nearest petrol station to put 30 litres in it to get me home 80km away. Car started on just a few cranks when i picked it up and also after refuelling at a 711 using high flow ( so it was diesel not petrol )

Got home and parked it. Next morning tried to start it and all she does is crank with no hint of trying to fire.

I thought it could be fuel but even 711 diesel shouldn't be that bad. Have run a lead light over ALL fuses even those under the bonnet and all are OK.

One interesting point is on the way home it seemed to loose power going up a fairly steep and long 1km hill. My 3.0 TDi will accelerate up the same hill from 110kph to 125kph without any problems where the 42TDi started at 110kph and crested at 95kph.

Any ideas?

Try priming the fuel system. On the fuel filter pump there is a little breather, open that up and pump it until no more air comes out and diesel starts to come out, then close it and keep pumping until it goes hard. Try starting it then.

Have you tested that you are getting power to the glow plugs?

As above it will take a lot of pumping to prime the system,
found that out after changing the fuel filter

Is it a wagon?

Always remove inlet/outlet hose and unbolt filter housing and fit new filter in the shed after filling it with diesel.
Far less pumps to prime it.

Thanks all and since this is the fourth Y61 I've had I;ve never come across this one. Mudrunner was the closest. After paying a diesel mechanic to come and check it all out we found that the spare key I was using did not release the immobiliser. Being RG colour blind the dash indicator doesn't really stand out for me. The main key works just fine. Go figure!

Looks like I need a new key or at least the spare one recalibrated to the immobiliser.

Ya learn something every day.
