Hey guys,
I have a bottle of below loctite red(263).

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/LOCTITE-263-10ml-RED-THREADLOCKER-HIGH-STRENGTH/251934178587?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1% 26asc%3D20131017132637%26meid%3D16c929f3319043e3ad 3be1faecc7d56c%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D4%26rkt%3D4%2 6sd%3D400660911601

It doesn't cure at all(even after leaving it for days).
I shook the bottle well enough to mix it.
What is going on?!?!?!?
Does it need heat to cure( I didn't think so)?!!
The bottle is few years old, but it's still should work, shouldn't it?
The bottle cap was left shut properly, so it never vented out.

Thanx

Its an anaerobic substance so goes off in the absence of air.

Didn't quite understand it mate.

Doesn't it cure in the presence of the air??!!
Or does it need bit of heat as well?!

So, if the lid is tight and left alone without any venting to the air, the chemical should stay inside without changing, should it not?!
The bottle cost around some $30 few years back.
I thought it should last few years without deteriorating.

Or did you mean that to keep it going for years without deteriorating, I need to actually vent it to the air once a month or so??!!

Cool, but now how do I explain my un-curing Loctite 263 bottle??!!

In other words, if I drop a droplet of Loctite outside and allow it cure, should it not cure(given 24 hours or so)??!!

Or does it only cure inside threads where the air is tight??!!

Pretty sure it won't set unless it is placed on a thread and tightened up. Just putting a blob on something is no different than putting a drop of super glue on a flat surface. The super glue won't set until you press something on it.

Yeah, you may be right about that mate.
May be it's called thread locker for a reason.
It only cures in the absence of the air then.
There's air even inside the bottle, so it won't cure.
Putting a blob outside also won't cure 'cos it's still getting the air.
Inside the thread it cures 'cos of the absence of the air.
So, I reckon it makes sense.

On the other hand. Super glue is a completely other way around. It cures in the presence of the air.
If you put a drop of super glue on flat surface, it cures in no time.
That 'cos Superglue reacts with air to cure.
Loctite Red apparently reacts with air, NOT to cure.

I'm guessing I understood it correctly now??!

So, there's nothing wrong with my bottle of Loctite Red 263?!!
Only something was wrong with my understanding of how it works??!!

When you do a bolt up with loctite it squeezes the air out when the air is gone the loctite will cure. It will never cure in open air.

Anaerobic- doesn't require oxygen
Aerobic- requires oxygen.
Just like the human body.

Thanx mate. I've been using the anaerobic and aerobic in fitness, but never bothered to understand the meaning behind it.
Now I do.
Cheers

P.S. I was preparing the throw away the loctite red bottle and buy a new one. :D
