Hey fellow patrollers,

Just signed up for a course in aircraft maintenance engineering, and aiming for an apprenticeship. I was unhappy in my old line of work and now I'm looking for a bit of a fresh start at something different! Just interested to hear any stories from people actually in the field or mates that are etc.

I'm not a mechanic, so I can't provide any input there, but I am a licensed pilot. Enjoyed some small single-engine flying for a while before moving overseas. My dad was an aircraft mechanic for the US Coast Guard for 20+ years. He's the one responsible for my getting started in aviation. He loved his line of work while he was in it.

Most of my mates are L.A.M.E, who have all just taken a golden handshake .From what I know
aircraft maintenance is OZ is knackered as most is now sourced overseas, mobs like QANTAS
have taken a huge gamble with this being the safest airline in the world, when maintenance was
done in most of the capital cities, BTW Qantas discharge all apprentices when their time is up

Cheers for the heads up mate! I was hoping to stay away from major airlines for this reason to be honest, not interested in being a number! Might try for civilian airforce work or regional/small airport work!

Cheers matey! Must be fun getting behind the wheel of those small planes!

@ Ash how about servicing choppers, there are plenty in the outback as you know.
Try places like Lloyds in Darwin.

Yeah all the way from corperate to mustering, my favourite are the Bell Ranger range, seat about 15.
used to fly 700k over the Timor sea to and island called Troughton Is then chopper it to the rig.
that was years ago now [88] but great memories I even have a HUET certificate form heli evacuation.
Was the only guy who could retrieve the life raft from 6mtrs of water in an upside down chopper.
