Hi all, this is a rather unusual thought here, but for increasing towing capacity, foot size and traction, has anyone ever come across a patrol, safari or maverick with dual rear wheels? I know that the Patrols axle cannot modified in this way, but what about converting a Nissan Civilian rear axle. I'm unsure of the overall length (tire wall to tire wall) of a civilian axle compared to a patrol axle. And if it is doable, what could be done about a diff locker? Just spitting ideas out of curiosity
Cheers, Dylan.

Some quick googling revealed this mate. So it can be done.
Have a look at this website.

Plenty on there. And they do the job too.

I think he means dual wheels not axles. So 1 axle with a pair of wheels on each end.

Duallies?

You'd be better off getting super singles like http://www.goannatracks.com/Home/Super_Single_Rims_for_Canter,_Isuzu_%26_Iveco.html
....The production dual wheels are useless off road.
They will not track well in sand or mud and will collect rocks between the rear tyres on gravel roads, this is the answer !

I then searched for super singles and wow seems duallies not recommended..

But FYI
Canter 4wd version - wheelbase: 3380mm, track: 1665mm/1550mm, grnd clearance: 245mm (current version rear axel is 2030 wide) and a 4.3t capacity
02 GU - wheelbase: 2970mm, track: 1605mm/1625mm, grnd clearance: 210mm can't get a y61 axel width only overall which is 1940....

That actually makes a lot of sense. I never even thought about that. But what about the load capacity of the standard safari/patrol axles? They'd have to be pretty decent too aye, like 3 tonnes?

1.8 rear and 1.5 front or something close to that from memory

Wouldnt a bigger motor give you more towing power [rated]
EG a 4.8 patrol manual against a 3lt TD auto

Yes it would but the OP is on about load capacity of the axle
