View Full Version : Which diff ratio's for GU TD42...

I currently have 4.3's. Now with the TD42 I think i need to go 4.1 or even 3.9's. 3.9's is what they come out with in the GU TD's. First gear in mine now is pretty much non existent. Its doing about 2200rpm in 4th at around 75k's. Having only driven the car with this motor for a couple of days, its quite different. City driving as is, will get annoying, going from first to second almost instantly from take off. I'm finding myself already taking off in second... I realise this ration would be better for bush driving, down hill runs, but a its my daily, I think I need to change them.
Would 4.1 be enough, or should I look for 3.9's? Its not something I can do right now, unless someone wants to swap ratios with me. Just thought I'd better do some research.

Cheers.

I have 3.9s in my GUIV and have always considered if i was going to swap them out it would be for 4.3s. I don't think the 4.1s would be a big enough step up for me. They might be a good step down for you though. If your keen i'd consider swapping the 3.9s for the 4.3s for sure.

Thanks. Just not sure if 3.9 is too far.
You'd have the big h260 rear wouldn't you.
Just remembered. I have the air locker in the front of mine. Means id have to strip it down.

I have 4.1s and 35s and would like 4.3s but found the 4.1s with the 285s pretty good.

Nah mine is the H223 rear. I have some 4.1s here Matt, you think they are good with the 305s?

Yeah I'm just a bit concerned say at 110k it will be revving too much with the 4.3's? Especially if I'm driving up to QLD in it. I might have to take the crappydore instead...I think 4.1's will be better. Like I said, 1st gear is almost non existant now, am going for second even before I've taken my foot off the clutch from first! Even though my muddies are 35's, most of the driving unfortunately is on the black top being a daily.

Are the actual centres the same between ratios? Where the crown wheel bolts on?

You can buy gears with a certain %%% overdrive, might be worth looking at

Yes. I wouldnt want it to rev anymore at 100km/h. It would sit at about 2400rpm or so at 100km/h. At 110km/h it was around 26-2700rpm.

Mudski 4.1s would prob be the best compromise. 4.3s will have you at 2800rpm or above at 110km/h.

All the front centres are the same. There are 2 different variants of the 233 lsd rear centre.

I spoke with jpc. He reckons 4.1 or go 3.9 and then down the track install some reduction gears. But he said even 3.9s will be o.k still, i will just lose the torque in low range

Mine runs 4.1 with 33inch tyres and is sweet. 4.1 is what the cab chassis came out with, which is what my entire drivetrain is from.

I had 4.6 after my conversion and that was way to much. If i was ever to change to 35's i may consider going 4.3 but probably just go reductions if needed.

I just rang Patrol a part out of curiosity and they said the rear H260 never came out with 3.9. The only way to do it would be to use the smaller H233 rear. Which means changing the entire diff. Anyone know of this? I've decided to do this before we go away, don't really want to but I'm concerned of the long drive up north and how much it revs at the moment.

Put the 35s on if your worried lol.

I have driven a td4dti patrol with 3.9s and 265s. I personally wouldnt want to have anything bigger with that ratio.

It was more out of curiosity about the 3.9s. Looks to be 4.1 it will be. Jonathan even noticed the other night when i took off with the go pedal down it wasn't real quick. Because pretty much straight away im hunting 2nd before ive even lifted the clutch pedal from 1st. Its not a big change in ratios but its better than what i have...
So. Lol. Its back at jpc's. I can do this myself but i literally dont have time right now to do it.
Then. Next year, reduction gears will be on the shopping list.

Mark if your considering reduction gears have a look here
http://www.patrol4x4.com/forum/general-patrol-discussion-17/group-buy-63%25-transfer-reduction-gq-gu-second-run-196201/index19.html

There's a lot of different vehicle setups that run different percentage reduction gears not a bad read a lot of information.

You can always buy them and install them later.

I got priced 490 dollars drive-in drive-out 4 install at 4x4 Obsession.

Good to hear that Mudski is back on the road.

Lol. yeah. I just wanna drive the thing. Plenty of time later to worry about a squiggly line on a piece of paper.

Its more about doing something properly on jpc's part.
