Has anyone mounted their second battery on the underside of a GU in the Chassis?

I'm on to my 3rd Aux battery in the engine bay trying to find an alternative mounting spot outside the vehicle.

I have been told on other forums that Brunswick Diesel mount it under the chassis.

Has anyone got one under there they can post some pictures for me?

Cheers

Dunno where. Not much room there. Id get one of those portable battery box thingo's, cant remember their name, which can charge via ciggie socket or Anderson plug. They also have an inverter built in too. Atleast this way you can use it portable too.

these battery packs are a great idea, they still need to be strapped down while in transit. Love the idea of it being mobile

Yeah not what I'm after.
I already have a second battery wired up.
I also don't want to have to lift the battery in and out of the car, its also not safe to have it in the car in case of an accident.

Brunswick Diesel mount it under the chassis when they do a conversion so I am told so it must be possible.

I have seen a picture on here of someone doing it I just cant find it again.

What engine mate? Why are you killing batteries? There are plenty of patrols getting around with 2 & 3 batteries under the bonnet. What batteries are you running? Have you got a low voltage constant draw when parked. Do you have a high mount turbo? Will a battery wrap protect from heat.

A battery mounted under the car is very exposed. There is enough room I reckon if you went a Gel and laid it on its side. Custom box to protect from stones and rocks. Doable for sure. Necessary..... Not sure.

3Ltr CRD its been remapped gets F'ing hot under the bonnet especially in summer when ambient temp is over 40.
I have tried wrapping it in air cell insulation but still gets to hot.

I very much doubt there is a standard one for a Patrol, as you can fit two batteries under the bonnet.

There are chassis mount boxes for Navaras, and the like, as there is no room under the bonnet for a second battery for a lot of the dual cabs..... That is where I would start looking and find one that is the easiest to adapt.

CJ, thanks for the PM. I actually pulled my battery out from under the truck as it got too hot under the car as well. The battery box that Brunswick use fits up quite close to the exhaust and my battery was regularly sitting at 50 degrees +, so I am not sure if that is a better option for you or not. I ended up pulling mine out and sticking it in the cargo area of my wagon, after shortening one of the drawers. It now sits snugly inside my drawer system at the back of the LH drawer with a fuse block mounted close by under the left hand 'wing' of the drawers.

FNQ has mounted a battery underneath his GU ,but was
having problems with exhaust making the battery hot.
If you want a second battery either recess it into the rear
cargo area or make up a battery pack with a designated
50amp anderson plug for power

I've fitted a turbo beanie to keep under bonnet temps down,
been on a while now and found the water in my AUX battery
stays topped up longer,
Why are you getting such high under bonnet temps?
You may need to wrap your dump pipe in exhaust bandage
to keep radiant heat at bay/

I can't see it being hard to do really. If you lay a gel cell or something on its side I think it would be a viable option.
But I'd be looking where the second tank sits. That's far enough back but not behind the rear axle to miss most things on the track.
But it's still pretty extream.

What if you get a steel shield folded up to suit and then a small duct into the wheel arch like the original air box so it draws cooler air from outside.

CJ,

I dug up these old pics of the Brunswick Aux battery mounting system. I added the light gauge metal heat shield on the RHS of the box, and the exhaust wrap on the pipe, but it did very little. You can see that it is a steel battery box, that is hinged off the chassis cross brace with a removable pin. The pin is locked in with a small bolt. I welded on the half chain link just as a point to grip it.

This is another perspective and behind the shunt, is the bolt that locks the battery box in the 'up' position. The wiring all got pretty tight against the bottom of the cab but was ok.

This is another one from before I started mucking around with heat shields.

I hope this helps some. One of these days i will probably mount an air compressor tank in that space.

Just for interest sakes, this is where i moved the battery to. The steel battery box is bolted through into the factory holes in the floor, so is pretty solid.

With a fuse block just outside the drawers in the LHS 'wing' section.

If you don't have a set of rear drawers then this might not work for you, and some of the other suggestions might be better.
