Yeah mate off the top of my head I couldn't really tell you. Probably something but pack as if not.

Ibbo
1st May 2016, 10:24 PM
What is everyone thinking for Monday night? Getting home or stopping somewhere?

Chubba - what time were you thinking we might make Iron Knob?

Trying to work out myself whether it is worth just finding a spot to camp the night on that PAR 23 before Nonning, launch it home or maybe stop at Whyalla and catch up with a mate. Pondering.

BigRAWesty
1st May 2016, 10:32 PM
I'll be hanging up there Monday night, seems by myself now..

Roosim
1st May 2016, 10:38 PM
I'll probably stay up that way Monday night as well

Ibbo
1st May 2016, 11:09 PM
Thanks - the northern end of the PAR just before Nonning looks like it gets back in some nice country and according to previous post from Chubba "Camping is permitted within 250 metres of the track" so could be an option depending on the time of day. Might need to push on a bit further depending how far you want to drive the next day. See how we go I suppose.

BigRAWesty
2nd May 2016, 07:09 AM
I've actually got the Wednesday off to..
I just need to be home by 3 to pick up the young one from school.

Chubba
2nd May 2016, 07:12 AM
Predicting a time for Iron Knob might be a little difficult. It all depends on track conditions, weather and such. Could be early or late. We haven't be this way before so we don't really know. If it's a quick drive we might want stay a little longer or we might think fuck it, lets keep going. Play by ear I think. I personally will make a call at the time. Setting up camp somewhere near the top of PAR 23 is a tempting idea though. All depends on the day. As long as we all have that option of an extra night we'll be covered.

BigRAWesty
4th May 2016, 07:43 AM
Ok meal planning.
Are we looking at pulling up with enough time for camp fire tea any night?
Would be cool if we could do a camp oven cook out but if not stove top meals it is..
I'm happy either way just some things are suited better for a slow camp oven cook over a stove..
Gotta plan some kid friendly meals..

Ibbo
4th May 2016, 08:51 AM
Seems like sat night could b possible if getting to wudinna at 3ish and pollda rock only 50km away. Mon could also be option depending how far u want to drive.
The plan was we all bring a bit of fire wood each right?

Just an FYI for the Adelaide crew..
Lower light is always much cheaper on fuel than the big smoke..
Maybe a quick phone call Friday night to see and a quick duck in in the way..
Still make the BP the meeting point though?
But my Olds travel threw there weekly and always top up there as its much cheaper.

What a sight! My wife and I camped at Kolay Hut campground for a few days and yesterday we witnessed the convoy of patrols roll past. We would have loved to have been involved in the meet up however our plans have been continually changing due to road closures because of the rain. We are 1 month into a 3 month tour. Managed to get a bit of mobile service at the moment. Hoping to do Googs Track for the next few days.Hope all involved in the meet up had a good time.

Thanks for a good trip everyone!

My only downer is that I have got home and unpacked and my camera is nowhere to be seen. I have a horrible feeling it fell out at one of the stops on the way home, I remember on one occasion opening the door and thinking something dropped down on my foot but looked under the car and saw nothing so thought I was imagining things. But now that I cant find the camera I am not so sure...Don't really car about the camera but have not downloaded the photo's since Christmas so potentially losing a few good memories - including this trip! Bugger.

Not sure if you're on Facebook, but there are often posts on there from people who have lost or found cameras.
If you're on FB put up a post on a couple of the 4WD and camping groups, amazing how it gets shared around. (I had one returned I didn't even know I'd lost.)
Good luck.

Gawler Rangers Trip Report

Sat 14th May 2016
Most of us met up on the Sat morning to drive up to Wudinna to meet Snicko And Ibbo then onto Pildappa rock. Well we didn't quite leave on time and the drive up was slightly underestimated so the timing for Wudinna blew out a little so we ended up meeting at Pildappa rock just on dark. Beautiful campsite and soon got into getting to know each other around the fire with a drink.

66822
How's that for a view from your swag.

Next morning up early quick look around the rock and a serve of bacon and eggs and we were off.

Went to the Organ Pipes.

66831

66832

66833

Along Turkey Flat Track to LP Track where 500m short of the Pondanna Outstation over the radio we hear "I need to pull over it's over heating." FS. Andrew (Rooism) had a hole in the top tank of his radiator and lost most of his coolant.

66834

We put our heads together and came up with a solution that involved leaving the car there and go set up camp at Kokodo camp have some tea and go back to retrieve his car that night. The drive down Conical Hill to the camp was a lot of fun. One of the two best tracks we went on.

66835

66843

Next day Mattera Track to the rest of LP Track to Kolay falls. That section of track was also good fun.

66836

66837

A group photo before lunch where Kath and Nev (Snicko) left us for home. The rest of us continued onto PAR 23 to Nonning. Par 23 wasn't as rough as I thought it may be. It was a well formed graded road. In the wet it would have been completely different.

66838

66839

About 2kms out of Nonning station we pulled up under some trees to camp. Here four more left us for home. The last night was Kallen (biggqwesty),Andrew(Roosim), Dave(Chubba), Nigel and Brett(Ibbo) and Mark (my brother). That night was a little cool. The morning was beautiful. Dew over everything, the sun coming up bathing everything in a golden light. I love being bush.

66840

66841

One more stretch of outback road down the Stringer Highway then home. Iron Knob in the distance in this pic.

So disappointed that I couldn't make this trip, even more so after seeing the pics and hearing how everything went.
Looks like I'll have time in September so am starting to plan a possible trip up then.
Without going through this whole thread were there any links to good maps of all roads in the area?
Is it doable as a single vehicle with proper planning? With a camper trailer? Doesn't look like there was any extreme driving given reasonable weather.

This is the map we used.

And the Gawler Rangers NP would be fine on your own with care.
Now having seen the tracks you could take a camper in there to one of the camp sites then see the rest of the park without it. It isn't extreme driving but due diligence and care is always the ticket.

A couple of good sections which we had it in 4wd but not hard..
More the corrigations.. some spots made your teeth rattle..

Camper doable, but you'll just need to slow down on the rough stuff..

A bit of a positive to come from the trip..
Most of the stock intercoolers showed leaks with the fine dust,
And Andrews broken radiator mount got us all inspecting and finding some issues with worn out or perished top rubber mounts..

Now to find replacements. .

Thanks for the replies.
Have a couple of mates that would do the trip but getting all together is an issue at times.
Brought the Mrs out from Ireland in 2001 and other than the regular tourist drives staying at Big 4's she's hardly seen the country.
Might be time she went without a proper shower for a few days.

That's the way.. a week with no showing soon shows your build lol..

But in all honesty now is the time to go..
Spring or autumn. Summer would be way to hot and I think winter the clay mud wouldn't make it a pleasant camp..

MY PICS OF OUR AWESOME SA MEET-UP

I know it been a week but better late than never!!

We went with Ibbo to the camp ground before the others and got to see the Rock in the afternoon.
Once set up we climbed and the view was spectacular!

66928

Can see how much the farmers have to crop!! Was a great advantage point.
We watched the guy go up and back a few times!

66918

66926

There were lots of water up there which surprised me.

66923

66925

We all took this pic but just had to put it in as there is nothing better than a line up of Patrols!!!

66931

Lined up again, so just had to take another pic!! hahaha

66932

Went to the pipes and just beautiful. Nature is so awesome!!

66933

You can't see how big this is but the colours are vivid with the sun on the rock.

66934

Lunch at the Old Homestead

66935

Oh NO!!! Every drivers nightmare...a break down!

66936

The vehicle was left to set with the first patch job attempt.
This lead to a night drive that everyone jumped at the idea.
As we had the roof top tent on and all set up we stayed at camp with Tegan to keep the fire going for the guys to cook their dinner on when they got back.

The next day the second patch job worked.
This then sent us all looking under our bonnets to see if we had potentially the same problem.

66937

Looking back over the park. By this time it had started to rain and as we have been here in the wet before I was feeling a little nervous.
If it continued to rain the road would turn into a skating rink in no time and we would all be passengers!!
But good fortune for us the rain didn't last.

66938

We all gathered at the Shearing shed and had lunch.
Then it was time for us to go our way home and the rest to continue on to the next camp site.
Was a great trip and hope we can get together again and do another one.

My camera hasn't turned up. Dont see how it could have been lost at last camp Kallen as one of you blokes would have seen it before you left.
Anyway on a positive note i replaced my radio aerial some time ago and have had terrible radio reception ever since. I have thought it may be due to poor contact but have not got around to pulling it all apart again to clean up. Tried the radio when got home from this trip and it works beautifully! I think all those corrugations rubbed the contacts clean. Those corrugations were good for something!

Hi Ibbo
Maybe you did my favourite trick and left the camera on the bull bar!! (I left my phone/camera there on this trip!!) I've done this more times than I would like to remember over the years!
Did you get your camera out when we had the last group photo and lined up the Patrols?
Maybe you could give the Rangers a call and ask them to have a look on the side of the road.
Where we had the pics was not far from the Accommodation so it should not be too hard to find our photo shoot spot!
