G'day mate. Upgrade is best. As you will get a larger tank ends as well as tig welded joints rather than crimped. On my 3L i had diesel smart unit and it was great. Mine was about $400 exchange unit from memory.

As Hodge suggested look around and see what the best Tigged IC is going for.
Makes a big difference.
May I suggest you also fit some gauges to monitor whats going on.
EGT and boost, After the gauges you can block the egr, PM mudski for advice and pricing

A question (& possible hijack).

Is the reason for fitting a welded intercooler to allow higher boost rates without ‘over pressurisation’ causing leaks on the standard factory crimped ic’s?
If so is there any benefit (& if so what) to spending money on a tigged ic if keeping boost levels below what a factory ic will take?

Inter cooler with the end tanks tig welded will out perform the factory inter coolers any day of the week... Welded vs crimped...

Yes, but in what way? - i.e.. allowing extra boost or is there more to it than that & if so what?

Ye it would hold preasure better... In saying that I was boostn 20 plus psi into my factory cooler until it starting leaking...

My factory i/c sweated oil even at normal boost. Over a period of time it ran down the engine and dripped near the flywheel area, looking like a major issue and making me wonder how many $s I was going to need. I replaced it with a tigged i/c but a standard, not bigger or better flow or boost or anything. No change in performance but cleaner motor and less heart palpitations.

If your running stock standard boost then theres no real performance gains in changing intercoolers... sounds like alot of blow by... u running a catch can? No harm in turning ur boost up... u and ur zd30 will love it...

My intercooler was already leaking when I bought the car (110,000km)and it was stock standard. Boost was also maxing out at 15 psi on the scangauge so no over boost problems. The Nissan Patrol intercoolers are rubbish and will fail on a stock vehicle. Same thing has happened to a couple of mates with stock ZD30's.
When the new cross country intercooler was fitted the car ran much better and I had a lot more power down low as the intercooler was not leaking. The turbo could still get the pressure up in the old intercooler but not at lower rpm. Car was transformed. :)
Not sure how much of the change was the bigger intercooler vs having no leaks in the system. I see this primarily as a reliability upgrade and any extra performance is a bonus.
