Early this morning I tried starting my 4.2 and there was no cranking, no clicking no nothing, as I was taking my wife to the hospital I managed to clutch start it, after driving for about 30-40 mins I parked it on a slope and tried to start with the key and it started fine. The battery was fully charged as headlights and all other electrics worked fine. I've ordered a cheap one on ebay to install until I get the origional one sorted, any suggestions etc appriecated

Thanks in advance

Usually you'd still get some clicking from a relay or something if it were the starter motor, I know this because I've pulled the lead off mine to try it.

If you're getting nothing at all, then most likely a loose earth from the battery or dirty terminals or clamps. Do as TD has suggested and give everything a good clean and make sure all screws, nuts and clamps are tight.

Also check the main 65A fuse located behind the battery

Hasnt happened again so far, but I havent tried starting it at 4AM on a freezing morning, Thenew starter I orsered is "Starter Motor For Nissan Patrol GQ GU TD42 TD45 TD48 DIESEL (HEAVY DUTY 3.2KW" so might throw that one in, as this one is a bit lazy in cranking, will pull it appart and clean it all up and keep as a spare for when I eventually do a cape york trip.....

Cold weather and battery failures only tells me the battery is U/S.
Hate to see you pay for a new starter be it a hi-torque one, if in the end it was your battery all along.
Cant swap batteries to test, also check Volts at the rear of the alternator
Doing short runs with lights on may not be enough to keep your start/main battery topped up.

Got no idea how many k's the starter has done as I've owned this truck for only 3 weeks, so same applies to its history of if its been through mud or water....

just make sure all the heavier wire have good connectors
on them and not frayed wires poking out everywhere.
Patrols are renouned for poor earths, So running new or extra will help.
Keeps us updated please.

I used to keep a hammer under the seat for my old MK I had. Car wouldn't start, I'd get out and whack the starter and off she went. Lol. Sticking solenoid was my issue though.

Replaced the starter today with one I bought off ebay, and it starts with a flick now, Awesome..... Noticed on the casing of the old starter heaps of dents were the previous owners or some one had had to hit the starter many times in the past to get it working....

Took a bit to get it out, had to take off one of the oil filters to get to the top bolt, then oh joy the positive from the battery had a strange bracket on it so had to cut that off and put a normal lug on but all good now, starts like a new car....
