Gday all I have a 92 GQ and I relise its getting on in age but when I fill it up the fuel guage doesn't quite go to full. It then drops flat out till get to just above half and hovers there awhile. It might only do 50 or 60km for this far. I worked out getting roughly 17 1/2 litres /100km, this before adding roofrack etc so I relise with increase on that. I know its hard to say over the computer but my question is, is it more likely to be sender or guage itself that's playing up and any easy way (for a dummy like me) to test it? I'm good with electrical stuff like adding accessories but not so good fault finding things like this. Any ideas? Thanks Steve

The technology used
on a Q is not very accurate.
Try cleaning the
earth point and
connections at the
tank. In a wagon
there is an inspection
cover under the floor
near the large barn door.
It is also a good idea to
add some earth cables
between the chassis
and the body.

It will probably be the sender but can be the gauge or earthing.
If you get around to pulling the sender out... check the wear on the resistance strip and tension on the wiper arm.

you can check the resistance of the sender if you pull it out. it should give a gradual reading if it jumps about its no good. you can pick up a variable resistor pretty cheap, plug it in and change the value wait a min or so then check the gauge. try small increments checking the gauge should show up a bad dash or wiring.
