View Full Version : Water tank needs a water pump

Ive decided to keep my Hilux single cab camper.
It has a 55 ltr Dolium plastic water tank fitted to the inside.
I'd like to remove it and fit a 59ltr job underneath. Has anyone done this
as I want to know which pump you used. I have on board 12v ,the fill point will be the old fuel flap
and the outlet is a ball valve and elbow on the front.
Open to all ideas on this one, need it up and running for the warmer weather.
The tank underneath the rear would balance it better than the tank I have ATM

Hi TD. A caravan supply shop should have the tanks and pumps plus any other plumbing required.

Hi TD, I purchased a 59 L tank and pump from Rays Outdoors for $130 about a month ago. They sit up under the tub perfectly behind the axle. All the plumbing was purchased from Briley Hose and Handling here in Hobart. A great job to do on a quiet Sunday.

Thanks ,Not sure how they work? is it a pressure thing, when you open the tap the pump will start.
If that was the case Id need to isolate the 12v when in storage. Yes I want to fit it up under the rear of the tub,
I'll make the brackets and stone guard. Sounding good thanks for the replies.
Need to get the balance better the 85 litre icebox on the drawbar, weighs
about 80 odd kg when full of ice and cans, Ill be removing it and
re fitting my alloy box further back along the drawbar.
Not long till its time to go fishing

The one I set up was on a momentary button that activated the pump. The inlet of the pump needs to be set up lower than the outlet of the tank so the water is gravity fed for self priming. I also used a inline tap to preset to regulate the flow of water as well as the pressure of the water. The closer the pump is to your outlet tap the more water pressure you will have. It comes down to a bit of trial and error in testing. once the inline tap is set you can forget about it.

The diaphragm pumps operate when you open the tap. I’ve always installed them with an accessible online switch so I can switch them off whilst travelling, just in case a hose gets damaged. I also switch off at night to prevent annoying ‘chirps’ as the pump runs momentarily due expansion/contraction of water as things cool down (reducing pressure). You don’t need high pressure or high litres per minute. Look on eBay for the small 3.8 litres per minute pumps. (eg. http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Johnson-Aqua-Jet-Mini-Water-System-Pump-12V-3-8L-/181828356375?hash=item2a55d08917 (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1?campid=5336709507&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F1%2F705-53470-19255-0%2F1%3Fcampid%3D5336709507%26amp%3Btoolid%3D10001 %26amp%3Bmpre%3Dhttp%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.com.au %252Fitm%252FJohnson-Aqua-Jet-Mini-Water-System-Pump-12V-3-8L-%252F181828356375%253Fhash%253Ditem2a55d08917) - or http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/SEAFLO-Marine-Boat-12V-1-2GPM-35PSI-Water-Pressure-Diaphragm-Self-Priming-Pump-/161575938530?hash=item259ead29e2 (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/705-53470-19255-0/1?campid=5336709507&toolid=10001&mpre=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com.au%2Fitm%2FSEAFLO-Marine-Boat-12V-1-2GPM-35PSI-Water-Pressure-Diaphragm-Self-Priming-Pump-%2F161575938530%3Fhash%3Ditem259ead29e2) there are plenty of similar ones with almost identical specs but their current draw is higher ).
They use way less current than bigger pumps so can be installed with much lighter wiring & save your battery power at camp. They are still 35psi which is more than adequate. My one’s been in for a few years now & happily pumps through a 1 micron carbon filter. It may or may not last as long as a Shurflo or Flojet, but you can buy several for the same price. I’ll grab a spare before going remote & both will still be smaller & weigh less than one Shurflo. If you want a bigger one I have a 17 litre per minute one you can have. It’s heavy & draws a lot of current, not sure how much but it trips a 15amp circuit breaker when almost up to pressure. I also have a 10 litre per minute Shurflo’s one of which I tried in the Patrol which I’m keeping only for tank filling away from mains water supplies (so I can filter the water going into the tank). Unless you want to use your pump for pressure washing your vehicle at camp :) anything more than about 4 lpm is overkill & potentially wasteful of water imho. A 10lpm will work ok but needs a reasonable tap. The garden sprayers we use as taps have less ‘control’ than a mixer tap at a sink & even with the Shurflo 10LPM it was difficult not to splash water out of a cup from the initial surge. An identical pump we had in the bus with a mixer tap worked fine.

Inline ‘Whale’ pumps are not bad but are not self priming like the diaphragm pumps, so either need to be mounted below tap level, or in conjunction with a hand pump & non return valve. They also require a switch to operate (often fitted with a foot operated switch in RV’s). They are quieter though. Most diaphragm pumps are relatively noisy, some more than others, but method of mounting them can make a big difference. Rubber mounted on a part of the vehicle which won’t act as a sounding board, & connecting to the pump with flexible hose is the way to keep noise to a minimum.

Ps. don’t forget to fit a ‘rock filter’ (mesh screen) between tank & pump to protect the pump.

So I buy a self primimg 4.7 ltr/min hook up the water and have an isolation switch for the pump when not in use

Both the ones I linked to would be fine. The cheaper ones you have linked to use more power. Horses for courses. I wouldn’t mind betting that they are basically the same unit but that perhaps they use a bit more power because less care is taken in assembling them, so maybe a bit more friction?

If you are happy with using a bit more power the ones you & Stropp have linked to will do the job, but as Stropp has demonstrated you can get them for $19. Singflo 2022. Cheap enough to buy two & carry a spare. :)

Just found the one I have http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/12V-WATER-PRESSURE-DIAPHRAGM-PUMP-HIGH-35-PSI-4-3-L-MIN-Caravan-Boat-RV-4x4-/170872003563?ssPageName=ADME:L:OU:AU:3160 I paid $49.95 for mine from this seller in Feb ’13.

Sorry 3d. Been out and about. I have not reply read the thread but get the just of the convo. I use a $20 self priming pump off ebay with 4lt/minute or something. Likely what has been linked already. Works great. 4lt/min is heaps and helps you conserve your water. If you only have 60 LRA you don't want to pump that out in 5 minutes!!!

I have an isolation switch which I use constantly as otherwise the pump has a bilt in pressure switch and is designed to turn off when you close the tap and it pressurized the system. When you open the two it auto turns on. Problem on a camper though is if you have a system failure it will turn on and empty your supply in minutes. I have had a hose blow off inside my rear door and without the isolation switch would have lost the lot before I could turn it off.

The tap cost more than the rest of the setup combined.

@ Cuppa I use a 3/4 tested ball valve with a f&m elbow for a "tap", water only needs to be lifted 250mm.
I'll get the tank and stone guard next week , I want to fill the water tank through the petrol tank flap.
As suggested I'll put an isolating swith some where handy as well, maybe one of those water proof toggle
switches JayCar sell.

@ MR you have confirmed what Cuppa has said, good heads up on the isolation switch.
As for a Faucet or tap I think Ill down size my ball valve as these pumps only have 10mm inlet and outlet

Might get this set up as the faucet will sit nicely on the drawbar with the hose hugging the chassis rail of the camper

Now with my camper/tub/trailer the 82 litre water tank will be positioned at the rear of the tub
to get some weight off the towball, any suggestions on where to mount the pump, eg half way
between the tank and tap and bolted somehow to the trailer chassis and protected from stones etc
My water outlet is below that merit plug on the face of the tub

Been in contact with the water tank mob, [Huntsman] and they suggest I use this moulding
along the stone sheild to insulate the tank a bit and provide a tighter fit.
