View Full Version : The Vic/SA Border late September advice?

Bloodyaussie

A trip I had planned is not going ahead and Mags's new job will have her off to the UK at that time so thought I would take the kids to the Vic/Sa border and wanted to know if late September is a good time?

Also I know its National Parks but I have the problem of my 2 Jack Russels, how would I go with them in that region.

Any advice appreciated ... cheers

Hey mate. Minor advice from my end. You probably know this but.... Speaking to a family friendly recently who went to do border track... Border control folk there are very strict on fruit & veggies. Supposedly it needs to be peeled, and vacuumed sealed or bought on the other side of the border. Someone else who may know here, might want to clarify this. But massive fines are in order apparently.

Whatever you do, don't
go alone. I went when
it was dry and there
was a few bog holes.
One nearly ate a Disco
in our convoy.
The Ngarkat Conservation
Park is not a good place
to take the dogs either.
It would be deadly if
one of your kids got
lost, trying to retrieve
a wandering dog.
And there is plenty of
wild dogs that would eat your
pooches for breakfast.
The track in the park
is one way, North to South.
We stayed at the Mundulla
Footy oval. It was clean
and the facilities were fantastic.
Also the pub meals were great too.

Do you have to drive through the holes????

I have no one to travel with at this stage.... hmm.

In late September it will be dry and the dunes will be very hungry. Easy to get stuck, especially on the crests. It's a good idea to have at least one other car. Last September I did the track with two other cars and it was difficult in places. Maxtrax helped a couple of times but the Prado in the group got stuck on a crest and the maxtrax plus digging would not get it out. A Navara had to snatch him out. :clapping: I also did the track 10 days ago and because of the rain it was very easy. Just like driving on dry dirt.
The bog holes all have chicken tracks. Just make sure you know how deep things are. As for dogs, they are not allowed and the area has been baited with 1080. You risk fines and/or poisoning the dogs.

There were some really deep ruts
in the chicken tracks too.
If you head over this way, are you
planning to come down south?

At this stage I have no idea where or what.... I am just thinking out loud.

I had planned to be on a 10 day hunting trip and I cannot go so am at a loose end and after what happened when Mags was in Italy and I was supposed to be traveling with the boy last Christmas I need a decent trip to go on to satisfy my itch.

At this stage
finances have
ruined any chance
of a trip, this year.
The Border Track
was good, but
I have been there
done that.

I am struggling to come up with a trip i can do with the kids and the dogs and myself..?

Wouldn't think it would be this hard.

If I had 10 days off, I'd much rather do Goog's Track from Ceduna to Tarcoola than the border track. Done both and Googs eats it alive. Googs can be done solo but you need to be prepared as it's relatively remote. A bit more travel but well worth it imho. 2 days to Ceduna, 3 days (taking it easy) up Googs, 2 days home. Heaps to see up that track too. Dogs a no-no (as per border track). Border track is a mini-me of Googs which is probably a mini-me of the Simpson! :)

My 2c.

Holy shit i just looked it up... Sa to Wa.. big trip.

I've always wanted to do the border track, did a tiny bit of it from one end ages ago with the olds. Was a bit tough going in the old jackaroo by ourselves in the soft sand. I reckon it would probably be better with a couple of cars, remember a mate doing it with a few mates, said there were a few pretty big bogholes they had to recover through. Interesting to see how you go if not a good one to do as a convoy trip one day. Being national park can't have dogies either. . .

Great stuff mate... not sure how prepared i could be for a trip like that... i definitely want to go just not sure how little Alexander will go.

I would need to hire a sat phone i gather.

The brain is ticking... you can probably hear it from your place.

It was going to be my trip for September School Holidays - not that big of a trip, but supposed to be great.

Off to Fraser at this stage instead, but that is dependent on the health of a travel companion, so it still may be on as I normally avoid Fraser during the school holidays if I can....

My brother and crew are doing it this weekend.
I think you'll be fine by yourself. We use to be followed by an x trail. They took a few chicken tracks.
Your winched up and 35's??? You'll be fine.

If it doesn't work out for September, maybe a future np trip if there's enough interest?

You won't need sat phone for googs
You will have phone service at mt finke and when you get to the rail line, good track, oh and in emergency Ceduna is only a few hours away

I think I would need to talk to one of you guys on the phone about this track as it does have my attention.

Here is a hint on fruit. If you have citrus fruit on board, freeze it if you have the option to. What ever is in the fruit would be killed. I was told that by a SA / WA border inspector last year.

What about Mungo National Park, kids would love searchings for fossils

Thats a good suggestion. Educational as well as good camping. Just watch out for the red back on the toilet seat!

I've decided I am taking the dogs with us so national parks are out..

Thinking about touring the Murray.. just waiting on my daughter's feedback?

How about a trip up to Broken Hill & beyond, maybe up to Tibooburra, returning via White Cliffs for an outback experience, but with relatively easy driving (bitumen & dirt), giving you the time you’ll need each day to stop early & set up camp. Could include a day or two on the Murray somewhere. Some easily accessible stuff around Broken Hill. (Stay in Silverton). Plenty of opportunity for the kids to see roos (red & grey) emus & eagles & lizards. Interesting outback pubs & scenery.

Well for all who are interested my brother has confirmed border is basic. His 80 didn't see low range and the patrols in his ground clicked 4wd for the hills and a few small Sandy patches.
It's also a pay to do setup.
Little desert he didn't get to but that is a top area.
Now we were at a wildlife reserve over the weekend and contacted the rangers who allowed dogs in.
So if your keen on a trip I'd ring and ask.

It does depend on the time of year and the amount of rainfall, but yes, there are only three really tricky sand hills, and the rest is a doddle ..... but still super fun at the same time too .....
