Hi guys and girls

As your all aware my GQ has been sitting in the driveway unloved for well over a year :(

I'm in need to move it 2 allow easy access for some steel shelving for the garage which is getting delivered in the next few days.

Should I empty whats in the tank and put a few fresh litres in just 2 move it or could I get away firing it up with the old stuff in, would doing this do any long term damage???

Cheers

Toddie

cant see it doing any damage but may not run as sweetly as you would like.
I take it its petrol?

I don't specificly know about the QG, but assuming its petrol and carby if you get stale fuel in it you will need to flush the entire system and maybe clean the carby. Drain the fuel thats in it is you can and use as much new fuel as you can. if it fires let it run a bit of new fuel into it before shutting down again. We have poured old fuel on the floor and chucked a match in. It doesn't burn at all.

Start it and see what happens. Good limiter bash when cold will clear it out lol.

If you don't wish
to drain the tank,
maybe put a half cup
of metho in
to break up any
moisture.

Todd,

If you cant get it going, do you want me to come up there and we can tow it to a new spot?

Should be right mate, I can get passed it but thought it would be a lot easier with it not in the way :)

Battery is on charge, don't like my chances of if winding over anyway :(

Thanks for the offer :)

Thanks all for the input, think I will just run the risk with old fuel if it kicks over

Didn't need 2 move it after all, the guy arrived this arvo and had dissembled the stands so just had 2 carry the steel shelf's past the car :)

Sounds like you really need to
give the Q a once-over and a
run. Engines don't like to sit
around for so long and unless
you have prepared them for
storage, they tend to deteriorate
quickly.

What's the point? He's never going to drive it again!

What caused the fuel to go that bad like water??!!
I've been using the same fuel in a 20 litre jerry can for mower & occasional generator.
It's still going good.
Isn't the charcoal canister suppose to stop any moisture getting absorbed into the fuel in the tank?

How does the engine go bad when left for long time without use?
I kinda know how the A/C goes bad after not running for a while.
How should we prepare an engine for storage?

Or you could just drain the old petrol from the tank, and use it for something else, like lawn mower, whipper snipper or something?! I use old petrol for cleaning. Cheaper than Kerosene and less messier.

Any moisture in the cylinders
will cause damage, especially
where the rings touch the bore.
Oil succumbs to gravity and
lubrication is lost in
critical areas. Any rust
scale in the cooling system
collects and forms deposits.
As well as the problem of
moisture forming in stale
fuel. http://www.hotrodders.com/forum/long-term-engine-storage-27947.html

Hmmmm.
I'm wondering, "oil pickling" the engine might be good strategy? :D
That's lot of oil though. :)

That's for real long
term storage. I
suppose if you
used that waterless
coolant in your
system, that
would stop one
problem.
Running the engine
until it reaches normal
running temp,every
once in a while
seems to be the
go.

you can buy octane booster for fuels that are not used often

yeh me bad, I did originally then slackened off and the battery went flat :(

Probable not now that I have turned it into a camping gear storage area.

You can always park
the Q down here at my
place. I could find
it in my generous
nature to take it
for a run, occasionally.

If you weren't so far away I would. Got no where to take it for a run around here been unregoed.

I thought it was only 25 years for vintage club rego but just read it was 30 years :( Can't hold out another 8 years so it will more than likely get parted out :(

Wish they brought in a recreation registration or charged rego by the k's that would suit me 2 a T

I'm only 1000k from your location. You are welcome to park it at my place. Like Mudnut, I'll make sure to regularly drive it in the bush. I'm that generous. :D

You better tell her first. 'cos I don't think you have a couch in the garage. :D
