went out on sunday and did a bit of 4wding and picked up a tinny stone betweeen the disc rotar and the cover plate...... after tearing my hair out for a while this morning i made a phone call to big rig who found out for me that to get in there the whole wheeel assemble has to come ofhub and rotar. i also have been told that this is a common issue with GU's...

the question is,,,,,,, does anyone know if there is a way of modifing the plate so that they self clear better,,,, or is there an easier fix for this issue????? any sudjestions for the future if this,,, when it happens again.:icon_bonk:

i got lucky today after big rig said he come over and lend a hand,,,,i gave it one more try and luckily the wee pebble drop out of its own accord. by the by thank to big rig comming over anyways was good to put a face to the name.

Good to meet up mate - and yeah, there's got to be some way of modifying so people don't just bend it out of shape each time to get stones out. My question would be, are they really needed? I understand they're on it for a reason (what that is I don't know! lol), but I figure they are not that rigid for protection and only serve to pick up and hold crap that tends to do more damage by not being able to get away.

Some front brake backing plates have air scoops to direct air at the brake discs for cooling, the backing plates also help keep mud out of the discs. I removed all the backing plates on my last GQ and never had any problems.

You've won me over - they are coming off ... caused no end of grief to most of us at LCMP after doing the mud pit.

GQ/GU backing plates all attach the same way and catch rocks the same way.

I am who is very familiar with this pain in the arse feature, While 4wheelin I play around a lot of rivers which all have just perfectly sized pebbles that love to hitchhike between the rim and discs or inside the disc covers. I find myself spending a very enjoyable time with a screw driver flicking them out otherwise I get the pleasure of listening to them squel and scrap the inside of my rims or discs, fantastic! spot the sarcasm! It does my head in so its good to know I could do with out these covers.

Thanks
Brett

Think there to stop the disks getting blasted with stones on gravel roads if the disks get peppered they chew up the pads inno time at all

That'd probably be true mate, but it's the old case of weighing up how much high speed gravel road work you do versus the pain of getting crap stuck in there - for me (but possibly not others) the decision is an easy one ... they're gooooooooonnnnnneee!!! LOL

I got one in mine a couple of weeks ago coming home from Woodford. Bloody awful noise and not very good for the brakes, but i drove on and it eventually came out.
