Hi all,
I have a slight rattle from my cat converter every now and then when I am idling. I first thought it was a heat shield rattling as that is what it sounded like.
Is this the first sign my cat is breaking up? Can I remove the cat and replace it with a plain piece of pipe as a cat is going to cost me big bucks?
Cheers
Tim

Hard to say if you cat converter is starting to break up, try dropping the flange behind the cat and have a look up towards the cat (engine off of course!)with a torch. It is probably worth replacing it anyway because if it does break up it will go through your mufflers and block the up costing you more money for a full exhaust system.
Legally you must have a cat converter, big fines if you get caught removing an emissions control device.

or if it is breaking up, replace the middle silencer with a straight through type for 100 bucks, then you have a nice sounding engine and any bits from the cat will blow straight though. Once it's broken up, the cat will be straight through too, and you've not technically removed it. Win, win, win! LOL

That sounds like a much better plan. I think I need to take it in and get that done.

subject to insurance and noise restrictions of course!!

Take cat off and break up the guts of it with a chisele/screw driver and hammer.

It brakes up pretty easy, then refit empty cat.
